The sky had been clear that morning.
By afternoon, dark clouds rolled across the town, swallowing the warm sunshine. The streets slowly emptied as people hurried indoors, hoping to escape the coming storm.
Lily Carter remained inside the town library, completely unaware.
She sat in her favorite corner by the window, surrounded by stacks of novels and notebooks. While others visited the library to borrow books, Lily came to dream. Every story she read made her want to write one of her own.
She opened a worn notebook and wrote a single sentence.
"Every great love story begins with a moment no one notices."
She smiled.
Maybe one day, she would finish her novel.
Maybe one day, people around the world would know her name.
A loud clap of thunder interrupted her thoughts.
Looking outside, she realized the rain had already begun.
"Oh no..."
She searched her bag.
Pens.
Books.
Her wallet.
No umbrella.
She sighed.
"Brilliant, Lily. You remembered four novels but forgot the one thing that actually keeps you dry."
Taking a deep breath, she stepped outside.
The cold rain soaked her within seconds.
She hugged her books tightly, trying to protect them from the water as she hurried toward the bus stop.
Just then, the sound of a motorcycle stopped beside her.
A young man removed his black helmet.
His dark hair was slightly wet, and his warm brown eyes carried an unexpected kindness.
Without saying a word, he picked up a spare umbrella from his bike and held it over her head.
"You'll ruin your books," he said.
Lily looked at him in surprise.
"And probably catch a cold."
She stared for another moment before laughing softly.
"You're worried about my books?"
"They look important."
"They are."
He smiled.
"Then they're worth saving."
For some reason, that answer made her smile too.
"I'm Ethan," he said, offering his hand.
"Lily."
Their hands met for only a second.
Neither of them realized they had just shaken hands with someone who would change their future.
Since they were heading in the same direction, they walked together beneath the umbrella.
The rain drummed softly against the fabric above them.
"So," Ethan asked, "what were you doing in the library for so long?"
"Reading."
"I guessed that."
"And writing."
"You write?"
She nodded shyly.
"Just stories."
"'Just stories'?" Ethan said. "Stories are how people remember things long after they're gone."
Lily looked at him with surprise.
"You really think so?"
"I do."
She had never heard anyone speak about stories that way before.
By the time they reached the bus stop, the rain had become even heavier.
The bus arrived a few minutes later.
Before getting on, Lily turned back.
"Thank you... for the umbrella."
"You can return it another day."
"What if I never see you again?"
Ethan smiled.
"I have a feeling we will."
The bus doors closed.
Lily found a seat beside the window.
As the bus pulled away, she watched Ethan standing in the rain, hands in his pockets, smiling as if they had known each other for years.
She didn't know why.
But she smiled back.
Sometimes, life changes with loud announcements.
Sometimes...
It begins with a single umbrella shared between two strangers on a rainy afternoon.
