Chapter Fourteen The Love of My Life I buy a bottle of champagne on my way home from my interview to celebrate being officially hired by the CIA. When I arrive the love of my life is lying on the floor unconscious, with a small cut on her scalp. I say my wife’s name, softly. My hands tremble as I kneel down to check on her. She has a pulse and is breathing, thank God. I pat her cheek but she doesn’t open her eyes. She appears to be sleeping. I have no idea what happened to her or how long she’s been lying there. I assume she fainted while I was gone and hit her head on the corner of the coffee table. Afraid she may have a neck or spinal cord injury I don’t move her and call 911.
