DARKNESS 28 My dream-self appears to be in a barn. She glances around, before climbing to a hayloft that casts her face into shadow. Upon reaching the top, she shifts to lie on her stomach, discarded strands of straw gathering upon her white dress. Below, the doors fly wide. She edges forward to watch the man who enters. As he glances around, she smothers her mouth over the laughter threatening to expose her. His head tilts, his nostrils flare with his inhalation, and as his eyes fall upon her position, he smiles. She shuffles back, out of sight, but he must hear her because he laughs. His foot takes the first rung. “I don’t know why you think I won’t find you, Jem.” While he climbs to her hiding place, my dream-self rolls onto her back.
