LONG AFTER FIRST LIGHT, the key jiggled in the door. In one swift motion, I was on my feet, snapped to a sense of preparedness. With the rattle of the key came the twist of metal upon metal, the mechanical workings clicking into place. Backing away and to the side, I faced the door, head down. Ears back, I exposed my teeth. The door nudged across the carpet. A low thrum vibrated in my chest. The door widened. I listened for the first step upon the soft pile. A steady heart beat thudded. Whoever they were, they held no fear. Well, more fool them. I watched, listened, waited. The toe of a foot appeared before the body emerged. I crouched, tensed for attack—lunging, the instant I knew they had no time for retreat. As though sensing my flight, they turned. Brown eyes widened in shock
