DARKNESS 34 For an interminable length of time, my body flickered through fluctuating phases of consciousness and pain. From sleep to awake. From awareness to denial. From terror to peace. Alertness became suppression before soothing overcame burning. Uproar evaporated, to be replaced by serenity. No light arrived during my hellish nightmare, only varying degrees of darkness. When awake, I heard the muted voices as they soothed. Even though they appeared near, I could make no sense of the sounds, nor find meaning behind the words. Worse than that, my lips refused to respond. The only answers they received were my screams of agony and terror, my body’s response to its undergoing alterations. When asleep, I heard nothing.
