As soon as I headed back outside after my ‘chat’ with Nathan, Josh called, “Come and play, Jem,” from where he raced around with the others, scrapping over a rugby ball.
I waved my mobile at him. “Need to make a call.” Crossing to the other side of the garden, where I hoped they wouldn’t overhear my conversation, I rang my sister.
“Jess, can you do me a favour?” I asked when she answered.
“What is it?” Jess’s rule number one: if someone asks for a favour, always ask what it is before you agree.
