For the first time in years, Ava woke up with a smile on her face.
The memory of the previous night replayed in her mind the moment she opened her eyes. Ethan's confession. His nervous expression. The relief on his face when she admitted she liked him too.
It still felt unreal.
She rolled over and reached for her phone.
Almost immediately, she noticed a new message.
Good morning, beautiful.
Ava's cheeks turned pink instantly.
A second message followed.
Just checking to make sure last night wasn't a dream.
She laughed softly and typed back.
It wasn't a dream.
A few seconds later, her phone rang.
"Ethan?"
"Thank God," he said dramatically.
Ava smiled.
"What happened?"
"I thought you changed your mind overnight."
She shook her head even though he couldn't see her.
"You worry too much."
"That's because I like you."
The words sent warmth through her chest.
It was such a simple statement, yet hearing it made her happier than she expected.
The next few days felt different.
Everything seemed brighter.
Work became easier.
The long hours felt shorter.
Even the annoying traffic on her way home didn't bother her as much.
For the first time in a very long time, Ava felt genuinely happy.
Ethan made an effort to be part of her life without overwhelming her.
He texted her throughout the day.
He called her every evening.
Sometimes they spent hours talking about absolutely nothing.
And somehow, those were Ava's favorite conversations.
One Saturday afternoon, Ethan invited her to spend the day with him.
"Where are we going?" Ava asked as she got into his car.
"It's a surprise."
She laughed.
"You really enjoy keeping secrets."
"Only the fun ones."
Nearly forty minutes later, Ethan parked outside a large community center.
Ava looked around in confusion.
"This is your surprise?"
"Come on."
He led her inside.
The moment they entered, children ran toward Ethan.
"Mr. Ethan!"
"You're here!"
Several kids surrounded him immediately.
Ava stared in shock.
Ethan laughed and greeted every child by name.
One little girl hugged his leg tightly.
Another handed him a drawing.
The serious businessman she knew seemed to disappear completely.
Instead, she saw a playful, caring side of him she had never witnessed before.
The children clearly adored him.
"What is this place?" Ava asked.
Ethan smiled.
"I volunteer here on weekends."
Her eyes widened.
"You never told me."
"I don't usually talk about it."
As they walked through the building, Ethan explained that the center supported children from difficult backgrounds.
Whenever he had free time, he visited to help with activities and fundraising projects.
Ava listened quietly.
She felt something shift inside her.
Most people saw Ethan as a successful CEO.
A wealthy businessman.
A powerful figure.
But standing here, surrounded by laughing children, she saw something much more important.
She saw his heart.
And it made her fall for him even more.
For the next few hours, Ava joined the activities.
She helped the children paint, played games, and listened to their stories.
The room was filled with laughter.
At one point, a young boy approached Ava.
"Are you Mr. Ethan's girlfriend?"
Ava nearly dropped her paintbrush.
"What?"
The boy nodded seriously.
"You smile every time you look at him."
Across the room, Ethan happened to glance in her direction.
Their eyes met.
And just like that, Ava felt her heart skip.
The little boy wasn't wrong.
Later that evening, after saying goodbye to the children, Ava and Ethan sat together on a bench outside the center.
The sun was beginning to set.
Golden light filled the sky.
"I'm glad you brought me here," Ava said.
Ethan smiled.
"Really?"
"Really."
For a moment, they sat in comfortable silence.
Then Ava turned toward him.
"I learned something today."
"What?"
She looked directly into his eyes.
"You're not who I thought you were."
Ethan laughed softly.
"Is that a good thing?"
"Very."
His smile faded slightly as emotion filled his eyes.
Ava reached for his hand.
This time, she didn't hesitate.
Neither did he.
Their fingers intertwined naturally.
Comfortably.
Like they belonged together.
As the sun slowly disappeared beyond the horizon, Ava felt a sense of peace she hadn't experienced in years.
For so long, she had been afraid of opening her heart.

But now, sitting beside Ethan, those fears seemed smaller.
