Ava Williams stared out of the bus window as the city rushed past her. The morning was busy as usual, with people hurrying to work and students rushing to school. She sighed softly and adjusted the strap of her bag.
Life had not been easy lately. Between working long hours and trying to pay her bills, she barely had time for herself. Love was the last thing on her mind. In fact, after her last heartbreak, she had promised herself never to depend on anyone again.
The bus finally stopped near her office building. Ava quickly stepped out and checked the time on her phone.
"Great," she muttered. "I'm already late."
She hurried down the crowded sidewalk, weaving through people. Her attention was fixed on her phone as she reviewed the presentation she was supposed to give that morning.
Suddenly, she bumped into someone.
The force of the collision sent her papers flying everywhere.
"Oh no!" Ava gasped.
She immediately knelt to gather the scattered documents. Another pair of hands appeared beside hers.
"I'm sorry," a deep voice said.
Ava looked up.
For a moment, she forgot how to breathe.
The man in front of her was tall, well-dressed, and annoyingly handsome. His dark eyes met hers with concern.
"It was my fault," he added as he helped collect the papers.
"No, I wasn't looking where I was going," Ava replied quickly.
Their hands brushed while reaching for the same paper.
A strange feeling passed through her, and she instantly pulled away.
The man stood and handed her the stack of documents.
"There you go."
"Thank you."
He smiled.
Ava hated how attractive that smile was.
"Have a nice day," he said.
Without another word, he walked away and disappeared into the crowd.
Ava shook her head.
Why was she even thinking about him?
She glanced at the time again and nearly screamed.
"I'm definitely late!"
She rushed toward her office, unaware that the stranger she had just met would soon change her life forever.
As she entered the building, her manager was already waiting.
"Miss Williams," he said sternly.
Ava swallowed nervously.
"You're late."
The worst part?
Her day was only just beginning.
