A Night To Remember

816 Words
The week passed quickly, and before Ava knew it, Friday had arrived. What surprised her most wasn't how busy work had been. It was how much Ethan had become a part of her daily routine. Every morning, she woke up to a text from him. Every afternoon, they exchanged messages whenever they had free time. And every evening, they somehow ended up talking on the phone before going to sleep. It was becoming normal. Dangerously normal. Ava had spent years guarding her heart, but Ethan seemed to slip through every defense she built. She was sitting at her desk when her phone buzzed. Ethan: Are you free tonight? Ava stared at the message. Her heart immediately began beating faster. Ava: Maybe. Why? The reply came almost instantly. Ethan: I want to take you somewhere. She narrowed her eyes. Ava: That sounds suspicious. Ethan: Trust me. Ava laughed quietly. Trust him. If someone had suggested that even two weeks ago, she would have called them crazy. Yet here she was, smiling at her phone like a teenager. After a few more messages, she finally agreed. By seven o'clock that evening, Ava stood outside her apartment building waiting for him. A black car pulled up a few minutes later. Ethan stepped out. For a moment, Ava forgot how to breathe. He looked effortlessly handsome in a dark shirt and black jeans. His smile widened when he saw her. "You look beautiful." Heat rushed to her cheeks. "Thank you." For the first time, she noticed the way he was looking at her. Not casually. Not politely. But like she was the only person he wanted to see. The realization made her heart race. "You ready?" Ethan asked. "I think so." The drive lasted nearly thirty minutes. The entire time, Ethan refused to tell her where they were going. When they finally arrived, Ava stepped out of the car and froze. The city stretched out before her from a beautiful hilltop viewpoint. Hundreds of lights sparkled below them like stars scattered across the earth. The view was breathtaking. "Oh my God." Ethan smiled. "I was hoping you'd like it." "It's beautiful." For a few minutes, neither of them spoke. They simply stood side by side, admiring the city. The cool evening breeze brushed against Ava's face. For the first time in months, she felt completely at peace. "No one really knows about this place," Ethan said softly. Ava looked at him. "Then why bring me here?" His gaze met hers. "Because it's special." The answer made her chest tighten. She quickly looked away. The last thing she needed was for him to notice how much his words affected her. They found a nearby bench and sat down. As the conversation continued, it became more personal than ever before. For the first time, Ethan opened up about his life. He spoke about the pressure of running a successful company. The expectations people placed on him. The loneliness that often came with success. "Most people only see the money and the business," he admitted. "They don't see the person behind it." Ava listened quietly. She understood that feeling more than he realized. When he finished speaking, she shared pieces of her own story. Her past heartbreak. The trust she had lost. The fears she still carried. Ethan listened without interrupting. Without judging. Without trying to fix everything. And somehow, that meant more than anything else. As the hours passed, the distance between them seemed to disappear. The conversation flowed effortlessly. The laughter came naturally. And every time their eyes met, something unspoken passed between them. Something neither of them seemed ready to name. Eventually, the night grew colder. Ava wrapped her arms around herself. Without hesitation, Ethan removed his jacket and placed it over her shoulders. "What about you?" she asked. "I'll survive." His scent lingered on the fabric. The simple gesture made her heart flutter. By the time they returned to the car, it was nearly midnight. The drive back felt quieter. Not awkward. Comfortable. The kind of silence shared by people who genuinely enjoyed each other's presence. When they reached her apartment, neither of them seemed eager to say goodbye. Ava turned toward him. "Thank you." "For what?" "For tonight." A soft smile appeared on Ethan's face. "Anytime." For a brief moment, neither moved. Neither looked away. The air between them felt different. Charged. Like something important was about to happen. But before either of them could say anything, Ava quickly opened the door. "Goodnight, Ethan." His smile widened slightly. "Goodnight, Ava." As she walked toward her building, her heart refused to calm down. Because deep inside, she knew the truth. This was no longer just friendship. And whether she was ready or not, she was beginning to fall for him. The thought terrified her. But for the first time in a very long time, it also made her happy.
