Chapter3: Mockery

752 Words
The air itself seemed strange. Near the entrance sat two pairs of shoes. One belonged to Jason. The other clearly belonged to a woman. They had been kicked off carelessly, as though their owners had been too impatient to arrange them properly. Zara frowned. Perhaps one of Jason's colleagues had visited. Maybe a relative. She tried to calm herself. As she entered the sitting room, her steps slowed. A woman's handbag rested on the couch. A pink dress lay on the floor. Beside it were Jason's trousers and shirt. Clothes littered the room. Then her eyes landed on a pink bra hanging carelessly over the arm of the couch. Her heartbeat quickened. No. No, this couldn't be happening. She shook her head. There had to be an explanation. Her fingers tightened around the gift box. Then she heard it. A woman's moan. "Harder." "Yes... right there." "Jason..." The sounds came directly from the bedroom. Zara froze. Her entire body suddenly felt cold. She could hear the bed creaking. Laughter. Whispers. The world around her became distant as she slowly walked toward the slightly opened bedroom door. Every step felt heavier than the last. Her hands trembled. Her breathing became uneven. Part of her wanted to turn around and leave. Another part desperately wanted to discover that she had misunderstood everything. She reached the door. And then she saw them. Jason. The man she had loved for five years. The man she had defended. The man she had sacrificed so much for. He was in bed with another woman. For several seconds, Zara could not breathe. She simply stared. The gift box slipped from her fingers. It crashed onto the floor. The sound echoed through the room. Jason turned. The woman beside him turned as well. Silence filled the room. The woman was the first to react. She looked at Zara and laughed. "So this is the girl you've been talking about?" Jason sighed heavily as though he had merely been interrupted during an important meeting. "You weren't supposed to come here." Zara's lips trembled. Her eyes quickly filled with tears. "Jason..." she whispered. "What is this?" He stood up without shame. Without guilt. Without regret. "What does it look like?" The words struck her harder than a slap. The woman crossed her arms and smirked. "Honestly, I don't know why you're crying. He stopped loving you months ago. You just refused to see it because you were stupidly in love." She laughed. Zara felt as though the floor beneath her had disappeared. Five years. Five entire years. Five years of loyalty. Five years of hope. Five years of believing she was building a future with him. Reduced to a few cruel words. Jason looked at her with cold eyes she barely recognized. "You should have realized that you were never enough for me." At that moment, Zara's heart shattered. She wanted to scream. She wanted to cry. She wanted to ask him why. What had she done wrong? Hadn't she loved him enough? Hadn't she stood beside him when he had no job? Hadn't she helped him pay his rent when he struggled? Hadn't she believed in him when everyone else doubted him? But the answers no longer mattered. Because the man standing before her was no longer the man she had loved. He was a stranger. A stranger wearing Jason's face. Tears streamed down Zara's cheeks. Neither of them cared. Neither of them showed any sympathy. For the first time in five years, Zara realized she did not belong there. Not in that room. Perhaps not even in Jason's life. She bent down slowly and picked up the damaged gift box. The wrapping paper had torn. The watch had fallen out. She looked at it for a moment. All the overtime. All the sacrifices. All the dreams. Worth nothing. Without saying another word, she turned toward the door. Her legs felt weak. Every step hurt. The tears blurred her vision. Behind her, the room remained silent. Nobody called her back. Nobody apologized. Nobody stopped her. She walked out of the apartment she had once believed would become her home. Outside, the evening wind hit her face. People moved along the streets. Cars passed. Life continued. But for Zara, something had died. Five years of love had ended in a single moment. And as she walked away with tears running down her face, she realized that sometimes the people who promise to protect your heart become the very ones who destroy it.
