Vera was furious as to why her uncle would do something like that, she knew he disliked her but thought it was just a personal feeling, one that he would not bring to work.
She waited for him at his gate, with anger boiling inside her as she tousled and turned, biting her lips and crossing her hands.
Her uncle victor, had called an emergency meeting at the company without informing her. Her father who had just been admitted to the hospital hadn't even stayed up to a week, and Victor was already planning his next move.
After about a few hours of waiting, Victor finally came through as his driver drove past her and into the compound.
She followed immediately, fuming mad. She was an important person in the company and was successor after her father so it was only right that she be at every meeting, and have an idea of whatever it is they talked about
“Good day Uncle” she said standing in front of him as he made his way down from the car
“Vera, to what do I owe this unannounced visit?” He asked, acting dumb like he could not tell why she was there
“Why would you hold a board meeting without informing me, in my father’s company? I thought it was pretty clear that I was the heir, the one who would take over from him, if anything like this should happen. I was trained for this my whole life.” She said shouting at the top of her voice.
The ill feeling towards her uncle was mutual and she hated him for every reason, but seeing as she was never one to be rude and condescending she was loving every bit of it.
It was the first time she ever had to raise her voice on the cocky old man and she was going to use that opportunity well.
“Oh Vera come off it, this meeting was not planned and besides, we had important stuff to talk about, not one a woman can handle” He said, being as degrading as ever.
He never liked the fact that she was a woman and it made him even more mad when he started to see her grow in the company till she got the position that she was in now.
He always reminded her that she was a weakling and that she belonged in a home, taking care of her husband and kids, and he hated that she was a lot smarter than his male children. So he made it a duty to always break her spirit every chance he got
“I beg your pardon? You of all people know how much smarter I am as a woman than your sons will ever be, you know how much I trained for this.” She replied to him, not bothering to reduce the tone of her voice.
“My father is not even dead yet and you are already holding meetings in his absence?”
“Like I said Vera, the meeting was unplanned. The other board of directors wanted clarity on a few things and I only went to clear the air and make them understand that everything was still under control” Victor said again. Something about his voice irritated her and she wished so badly that she could fire him on the spot.
“Well that is not your job and you have no right to do it. You know how much my father always prioritizes the rules and you went ahead to flaunt them, it has not even been a week since his admission?” This time her voice had switched from anger to disappointment. Personally she was not surprised as to why Victor was acting that way as he did not strike her as a good and mannered person.
Ever since she was little he always caused trouble for her dad and made him worry, even when he had a family of his own.
She was disappointed on her father’s behalf because she knew that it would hurt him to see that his brother was already planning to take over his company just a few days after he was hospitalized.
“The directors are asking questions, everyone is confused including our investors. There’s no one sitting on your father’s seat right now, no one calling the shots or making decisions, and right now it has affected a lot of other things. Don’t you see that I am just trying to help.” He was hoping to sound genuine as he continuously thought that she was a weakling who would fall for his lies, but Vera was smarter than that
“Stop with the useless jokes uncle, you are not in any way trying to help. I am the heir to my fathers empire, the only person good enough and qualified to sit on that chair till my father recovers.”
“But you left me out of a very important meeting like this, and you say you were trying to help? I could only think that you are doing whatever you can to get that seat for yourself.“ the fact that she was standing her ground made the moment even more impactful because Victor could Clearly see from her eyes that she was not going to be an easy match
“I hope you have a good explanation for this rubbish when my father wakes up.” She added folding her hands underneath her breast this time.
“If he wakes up, that is, I mean it’s unlikely. Your father was found late, lying there in his office, who knew how long he had been there for. Right now he is not even responding to treatment nor is he giving any signs that he is getting better, what do you think about that Vera?” He said, hitting a very bad spot in her heart, he was really a piece of s**t.
“Excuse me?” Vera exclaimed, feeling very surprised that her uncle would say that.
“Is the company that important to you that you would write off your only brother as dead just so you can take over?” She asked, pointing fingers at him. His words sounded so provocative to her and it only took a lot of energy and composure to help her keep calm in that instant and not make a scene.
