London was chill, it was like the heaven one of his religious teachers used to talk about . Or maybe a dream he once had after getting his first girlfriend back in the days.
Before the chauffeur and his assistant left him alone, he was shown his books, other learning materials that he needed and a laptop. It laptop was an all new macbook Pro. He was helped to initialise it, ofcourse initializing such a gadget in the fantasy world he had just landed would only add more butterflies into his already rumbling stomach. He later learnt that the room had a free internet connection. This gadget would later become his pride and most treasured asset. There were new clothes too, shoes and everything that he needed.
Later when he had been left to swim for himself he took rounds in the house to familiarise himself with the rooms and the utilities in it.
Man! You're lucky. You should be sleeping at one of the mud wall huts competing for space with goats and sheep. He thought amused by the new space.
The sitting room had leather sofas, an air conditioner, bookshelves and many other things that he would not dwell on knowing for he didn't even know if he would ever need them. Such things included a flower vase and an ash tray on the coffee table, he never smoked so he would not in anyway use it. For the flower vase, he assumed it had been accidentally placed in the house. Flowers are always planted outside the house if only to impress visitors and get enough sunshine.
Kitchens in his place were meant for the women folk and so he was greatly disappointed after learning that he would be cooking for himself. At this moment a thought of marrying came to his head but he dismissed it as fast as it had come. Marriage was against the terms of the scholarship. If he married, he would risk losing the scholarship or being deported back to Kenya.
His tour ended abruptly in the kitchen when his door bell rang. He went to answer it and found a very beautiful girl standing by his doorway. Well it was not just any random girl, from his wavy hair to his toes which seemed to have been specially made for a fantasy movie. Her breasts defied the law of gravity sticking straight like Letoo hills back at his home village.
Seems the devil got me really quick!
After greetings, he realised she too was a new student in the same school he had been admitted. He was even surprised after learning that they would be in the same class the following day.
"I'm David, it's a big pleasure meeting you". Well , was big really necessary.
"You ain't new to this place are you, imma show you around if need be".
David never heard a thing, that speed needed subtitles to be understood and there was no time for the fantasy. How could one person be so blessed, he imagined a warm night in the Kapiti plains back at home, holding her tight and whispering...
Wake up David! He had to recall his senses.
"Eerr.. Mmh, I mean I'll be looking forward to meeting you tomorrow". He wondered what he was even saying, how his confidence failed him remained the test of time.
"See you David, take care"
"Bye... By too"
Crap, he had not even asked for her name. What is this demon? He wondered loud as he fed on the steps of the heavenly chic, London! The good thing was the fact that she had picked his number, something which had never happened in his entire life. It was always his duty as a man to get as many girl phone numbers as he could back at home and make the first move.
On the first night, he prepared rice and chicken stew for supper. Food for him was not a big deal because it was provided and all stocks would be replaced once depleted. He was being treated like a prince. He ate his supper alone in the dining table and proceeded to watch the TV. All the programs were boring and therefore he turned to Netflix and started a series, The Wu Assassin. It was a good movie and he enjoyed the first episodes. Before going to bed, he set his alarm at exactly at six. Although this was early for him, he needed more time to get himself ready by 7.30am when his friend would be picking him. Atleast the phone number had helped. She had texted to inform him of the same.
By the time she knocked at his door, Rono had got himself ready. He greeted her covering the air of confusion which had started building. Before he could turn the door knob, Laura gave him an hug and a peck on his cheeks.
This isn't headed towards the right direction. Focus dear Rono. He advised himself.
This was England and he had to learn that all that he had been watching on different movies was not any fiction. It was real.
"Thank you. I forgot to ask for your name yesterday, I'm sorry" David said appreciating the courage that came with the hug, he felt like a movie star.
"Laura", she replied smiling broadly. Her milk white teeth seemed to have been arranged using superior geometric tools.
"I like the name". David managed.
The two were dressed formally and if not by bad luck, Rono would be confused with a male model who had been in the art industry for some time. Thanks to the stable internet connection at his apartment, atleast he could do some research on dress codes. Laura was equally beautifully dressed in her velvet dress that did nothing to hide her beautiful feminine features. Her body was well curved like an hour glass and any man would fall for her. Rono had not failed the men fraternity for he was already falling for her.
At the parking lot Rono was surprised when Laura opened her porch and took car keys.
This better be real!
He had never in his whole life thought that a student could drive. Cars were meant for the grown ups and not the university students. Furthermore in his home village, only one person owned an old pickup truck. He would be further surprised to see the girl open a brand new Ferrari. Laura opened the door for him, closed it after he entered and turned to the driver’s seat. She ignited the engine and within seconds they were on their way to school. Surprises seemed to be arranged in a row, it seemed like he would be learning something new every minute. He had took his first ride in a Rolls Royce but it was not this comfortable.
London school of economics was not far and within no time they were at the school gate. Rono would easily walk if he had not got this ride and be there in only ten minutes. He had been walking for twelve kilometres to school every morning and twelve kilometres back home while in high school. He had never on any single day got punished for being late because he was a fast walker. In most occasions he eve ran to school. Anyway, this was not the village. The minute Laura’s Ferrari entered the school everything in London school of economics seemed to come to a stand still.
For the better part of the day Laura and Rono became the main talk. Who was she? And who was this lucky black bodybuilder? Are they in love? These and many other questions were left unanswered. The most expensive car in the parking was a range rover sport belonging to one of the senior lecturers. Now in the sight of everyone, a new student had just reported driving a ferrari. As they moved to report to the school for the first day all eyes were on them. Rono especially felt uncomfortable. The eyes felt like arrows shooting at him. At some point he even wished the world would open and swallow him alive.
Maybe London is mocking me? Ofcourse no, it's afraid of this fierce moran. Rono thought.
When they finally entered the elevator to the third floor of the office block Rono was relieved. He took a deep breath and felt at ease. Laura was comfortable and had no signs of tension. May be she was used to the attention she had created.
By noon that day Rono had registered as a student in the London school of economics. The Head of his department was a polite man and took him through the process carefully giving him instructions and guidelines that he had to adhere to. Academics was his core business and therefore he was encouraged to work hard in his studies.
"I believe you got this chance because you deserved it, now I expect nothing but the best from you". The narrow faced fellow with a caring tone.
"I will give my best, I can promise you that". David assured him, that was the reason he was there anyway. Excellence.
"I trust you"
When the instructor realised that Rono was from Kenya, a country famous for its rich athletic culture, he directed Rono to the school’s sports department. He wanted him to enroll in the school marathon team as soon as possible. He had taken no time to notice Rono’s athletic features, it was soon proof enough when he saw the boy’s sports records. Rono had been a sports champion in his school for so many times and his accolades, some of which he had carried testified that. He was given an appointment to see the school's sports director in two weeks time. When he left the office he realised he had stayed too long. The queue of new students was getting longer.
Laura was seated on a bench outside the building waiting for Rono. Since they had no class on the first day, they went to the cafeteria, ordered some snacks and ate happily. Rono had not got to know this girl but with the way she had taken care of him, he concluded that she was a kind and generous person. Rono wondered why they called the institute The London school business instead of The London university of business. In his mind, he could not even speak of other kenyan Universities like kirinyaga university, a university he had only known after his high school friends, kipchumba Hezron and Kajetan Carlos were admitted to. He knew such a University would disgrace the name of a University when compared to the London school of economics.
Laura on her side talked of how she had almost committed suicide when her parents denied her a chance to visit maasai mara national reserve in Kenya. Rono wondered why someone would go the extend of taking their life to visit Maasai Mara. His people called that place a waste land where their maa neighbours lived herding cattle. Rains were scarce and most of their cattle died of hunger due to lack of pasture and water.
She is strange! Rono had to accept.
He was on his way to the first class one of the chilly mornings. It felt like those cold mornings in his homeland. Although he had been used to such weather, this one was proofing to be abit more rough. He had a Nike hoodie on, a scarf and a matching muffin but the cold found way into his mascular body. He regretted why he had not taken coffee that morning or why he had turned down Laura’s offer to pick him on her to school. He had insisted that he wanted to take exercise although he meant to know the way to school incase one day Laura failed to turn up. As a man he had failed to get enough words to explain all that. He never wanted to feel like he was getting a big favor, especially from a girl.
He was almost at the school gate when Laura pulled with his classic ride, a young man was seated on the passenger seat more comfortable than the owner. He felt a sudden lump of hatred form in his throat. He meant to hide but it was too late, Laura waved at him smiling but no. It wasn't time fantasies.
