Chloe and I used to be roommates, and Ethan was a year below us.
Not long after college started, Chloe noticed Ethan.
Maybe they both enjoyed the hazy sweetness of never saying the quiet part out loud. They exchanged love letters for three full years without ever officially getting together.
I was the courier who carried those letters back and forth.
Their feelings grew stronger and stronger. By the time they were finally ready to confess, we had already graduated.
At the graduation ceremony, just as Ethan blushed and picked up the microphone to confess, three guys surrounded Chloe and tore off her perfect mask.
Three years wasn't terribly long, but it wasn't short either.
It was long enough for a person to love until he lost himself and nearly broke down.
Ethan cut off all contact with Chloe, but he still used me to keep track of her life.
I felt sorry for him and, in my own pathetic way, took advantage of the opening she'd left.
After we made our relationship official, Ethan posted photos of us together on all his social media accounts.
When Chloe found out, she showed up at my house that very night and blocked my door.
The two of us fought until we were both badly injured and ended up in the hospital.
While I lay there, Ethan stayed by my side the entire time.
I thought he'd finally let go of Chloe and was ready to be with me wholeheartedly.
I never imagined that, years later, the two of them would get tangled up all over again.
If I hadn't installed a dashcam because I was afraid he might get into an accident, how long would he have kept me in the dark?
Maybe I never would have found out. Maybe not even until my dying day.
I took a deep breath and tried to hold back the dull, relentless ache in my chest.
Ethan held my hand and explained himself over and over.
Chloe looked at him with a painful mix of love and heartbreak in her eyes.
The chaos hit me so hard that my vision went dark for a moment. I couldn't stay there any longer. I pulled my hand free from Ethan's and turned to leave.
Ethan hurried after me.
But he stopped several times on the way out. In the end, he still looked back at Chloe.
"Chloe, we're not meant to be. Don't bother me again."
His voice trembled with grief he couldn't hide.
I quickened my pace, and only then did Ethan finally catch up.
"Fine, this time it was my fault, okay? I swear I'll never see her again."
His eyes were red, but there was still a hint of indifference in them.
In the past, whenever he looked at me like this, I'd soften and forgive him.
But this time was different.
I started the car in silence.
We hadn't driven far when a white sedan suddenly shot out from behind us and cut in front of my car with a hard brake.
I wrenched the steering wheel and barely avoided a crash.
Chloe got out of the sedan with a cold expression and pounded on the window several times.
Before I could move, Ethan panicked. He shoved the door open, stepped forward, and slapped Chloe hard across the face.
"Chloe Sullivan, are you insane? I told you the only person I love is Victoria! Get lost!"
Then he hurried back to me.
"Victoria, are you all right? Did you get hurt?"
His tone was full of concern, but his eyes kept drifting toward Chloe.
I sneered, pushed his hand away, and drove off without hesitation.
