Ethan's tears fell onto the hospital bed.
"Victoria, when I got back, I found you passed out on the floor. It scared me to death..."
That fragile, pitiful look could no longer soften my heart.
His voice trembled as he recounted every loving moment we had shared.
"I can't live without you. I'd die if I left you."
I almost laughed.
He could live without me. What he couldn't live without was the pampered life I gave him.
A faint, humorless smile tugged at my lips.
"Then what about Chloe? It seems she can't live without you either."
Ethan froze for a split second, then quickly composed himself and shook his head.
"Whether she lives or dies has nothing to do with me. For all I care, she can drop dead."
He quickly lowered his eyes, but he failed to hide the guilt in them.
I smiled in a way he couldn't read.
"Is that so? Then call her in. You two can explain everything in front of me."
Ethan couldn't give up the money and the easy life I gave him. And he couldn't give up his first love either.
I wanted to see just how far down this went.
He hesitated for a long time. Under my sharp gaze, he finally stood up and opened the hospital room door.
Chloe had been standing right outside.
She'd heard every word Ethan and I said.
She met my eyes and curled her lips. Then she pulled a folding knife from her pocket and pressed it to her neck.
Blood welled up immediately.
"Ethan, if you don't choose me, I'll die."
Ethan's pupils shrank. Trembling, he rushed over and grabbed Chloe's wrist.
"Chloe, stop acting crazy! Put the knife down..."
His voice broke. The concern he'd hidden for so long finally showed.
On the verge of breaking down, Chloe yanked Ethan into her arms and held him tight, refusing to let go.
"Ethan, I know you still have feelings for me. Otherwise, after all these years, you would never have let me back into your life, and you would never have..."
Before she could finish, she released him and staggered over to me.
She took out her phone and held up several unmistakable, gut-wrenching photos for me to see.
In the photos, a man and a woman were kissing as if they couldn't bear to part.
"Victoria, Ethan and I got together the very first day we saw each other again. He never forgot me. He only stayed with you because he pitied all the years you spent on him."
I stared at the photos. It felt as if my heart had been smashed to pulp by a heavy hammer.
Chloe went on and on.
"Even if you took advantage of his vulnerability all these years, I'm the only person Ethan has ever loved. Victoria, know your place and let him go."
She laced her fingers through Ethan's. With every word, she painted me as the shameless other woman in their love story.
I could no longer hold back my anger. I shot to my feet and swung.
My fist struck Chloe hard across the face.
"Get out!"
Chloe swayed. Her knees buckled, and she dropped to the floor.
Her forehead hit the cold floor with a dull thud. Her voice came out choked and pitiful.
"Victoria, please. Give Ethan back to me, okay?"
I watched her coldly and said nothing.
Ethan couldn't take it anymore. He reached down to help Chloe up, then glared at me.
"Victoria, if you're angry, take it out on me. Don't take things too far and bully Chloe."
With that, he took Chloe's hand and hurried out of the room.
A long while later, I slowly sat back on the hospital bed and dialed a number.
"Ethan and I broke up. I need your help with something."
