Sophia's POV
“How the hell did you get in?”
“Besides, What the f**k are you doing in here?” I yelled at him, holding my robe firmly over my body.
“Relax! You left the door open so I walked in to see if you were okay.” Alex said, stretching his hands over to calm me down.
“No, I mean, what were you doing in my house in the first place? I voiced in a higher pitch.
“Oh, that!”
“I came over to meet you so we can head back to the office together, I noticed you had taken longer than I expected.” He said.
That wasn't a good reason but I couldn't bear watching him see me like this, I had gotten irritated.
“Okay, if you say so.” I shrugged, still holding my robe firmly against my body. “Can you at least excuse me? I'll meet you downstairs once I'm done.”
“Yeah, sure!.” He said as he walked out, shutting the door behind him.
I quickly rushed over to the door and locked it. I still couldn't understand why he made such silly moves.
I know he's caring and all but why would he invade my privacy? I said to myself still breathing hard from the shock. After a few minutes I got down to him, he was holding Mr Knuckles.
“I'm ready now, can we leave?” I said with a straight face.
“Sure, I remember I promised Emily that I'd come by.” He said as he stood up from the couch.
“How's She?”
“She's quite alright.”
“But now you've mentioned it, we could pick her up after our meeting,” I said, ignoring the awkwardness that already lingered in the air.
**********
We just finished the meeting, it was 2:47 pm already, we got to a candy store and I got the chocolate treats, just as I promised to Emily.
I made sure I didn't forget. This way, when I make a promise, she knows I won't break it. We pulled over at her school, waiting for her to come out.
“You know, you could use a babysitter,” Alex commented as we waited.
“I know but being her only parent, I wanted to be in every stage of her life“ I responded, staring forlornly through the window.
“I never got to see my mom, but my Dad made sure I had the best life he could offer,” I said, trying to hide the sadness I felt. Well, that's a different topic for another day.
“I'm sorry I brought this up.”
“No Alex, it's fine.”
**********
The next morning…
I drove to the office parking lot, making sure that I had made copies of the slide this time, you can do this Sophia! I said to myself as I headed towards the office building.
“Good Morning Ma'am.” The receptionist, Grace, said as I checked in.
“Good morning to you too. Is Alex here yet?” I said, picking up my office key card.
“No, He isn't.” She responded.
“Alright Grace, have a nice day.”
“You too ma'am.”
I walked into the Elevator, and within a few seconds, I was on my floor. I took a glance at my watch, it was 9:29 am, and the meeting was by noon today.
My stomach churned for a while. This wasn't my first time attending an external meeting, but it was my first time being on the front line.
My actions and response would determine the success of the proposal, and it's putting a lot of pressure on me.
I reached my office door and swiped my key card but it didn't open. I kept on trying for about a minute. It didn't open. It was then I realized that I had been promoted.
I must have gotten so carried away by the meeting that I forgot I had a new office. After a while, I got into it. It had a much more luxurious and spacious setting than my former one.
I settled down, took out my laptop and went through a copy of the proposal details. Shortly, I heard a knock on the door, I took a firm glance at it.
A young lady dressed in corporate wear came in with a tab in her hands. As soon as I saw her, memories of Nathan graced my mind. I remember setting up meetings and carrying out some personal duties, even the naughty ones.
I know my happiness was short-lived but I still appreciate the good times, presently, my lips gently curved into a smile.
“Good Morning Ma'am, I'm Olivia, your new personal assistant.” She voiced out.
“Good morning, you can call me Sophia,” I responded.
“Alright, ma'am.”
“And from what we have here, you will be having a meeting by noon, that's your only schedule for the day.” She said after checking her tab.
“Yeah, I'm well aware of that,” I said.
It was 10:15 already, and the last thing I wanted was a reminder about the meeting.
“Here, take this, make copies of that, and get me a glass of water when coming.”
“Okay, ma'am.”
It was 11:45 am, and Alex was nowhere to be found. I hoped earnestly that he hadn't ditched the meeting. I tried calling him but he didn't answer.
I went on to the conference room, and as soon as I went in, I got a call from Alex.
“Hey Sophia, I know you're upset right now but we'll be having the meeting at a different venue.”
“Which is?”
“The Client has a ride available for you at the Parking lot, he was there much earlier, so just come along with him.”
“Besides, this is much tougher than I expected. Hope you're well prepared?” He continued.
“Yes, I am, Alex.”
“Good.” He hangs up.
Well, I wasn't prepared. Tension filled me as the clock kept ticking, and adding to this, I wasn't sure I could do it. I was at the parking lot, when a black Limo caught my eye, quite a client, I thought to myself.
The chauffeur stood beside the opened door, welcoming me. I thanked him and got in. After he shut the door, I looked forward to the client on the other end, he was locked on to his phone.
My eyes widened in disbelief when I realized who it was; suddenly, I froze on the spot. It was already too late for me to do anything.
He waited for a while, expecting a greeting from me, but he received nothing.
“Has the cat got your tongue?” He voiced out.
The sound of his voice sent shivers down my spine.
He looked up to where I was and suddenly froze at the sight of me. As soon as he did, My heart dropped to the floor.
