Chapter ThreeThe Marquis spent much of the time on his journey to Paris worrying about the future. He was also trying to plan how he could enjoy himself in Paris under the circumstances. But it was impossible for him not to feel depressed. He had been to Paris on numerous occasions, the first time being when he had only just left Oxford University. He and a friend had then sampled the delights of the gayest City in the world. Paris to him always meant amusement, a joie de vivre that he did not find and could find in England. The train quickly gathered speed from Calais and, as it carried him towards Paris, he was wondering which of the many courtesans whom he had known in the past he would seek out now.
