He paused before he added, “You will aim not higher than the shoulder of your opponent.” The two men then took up their positions back-to-back. The Marquis was a head taller than the Comte and his whole body looked athletic and lissom. The Referee gave the word and they began to move. It was then that Vilma, as if she could not remain seated, rose to her feet. “One – two – three – four,” the Referee began as she watched the Marquis. It then occurred to her, almost as if a voice was telling her to do so, that she should watch the Comte instead.
