He glanced at the clock and exclaimed, “If I am to catch the Ambassador before luncheon, I must dash.” “Thank you so much for coming,” Vilma said, “and please tell the Marquis that I hope he will soon be better.” “I will give him your message,” Peter nodded. Vilma walked with him to the front door. She was aware that he was looking at her with undisguised admiration. He held her hand for longer than was necessary as he said, “Goodbye, Miss Crawshaw. I trust that I may call on you again tomorrow to bring you further reports on the condition of our invalid.” “I would hope you will,” Vilma replied, “and thank you again for coming to see me this morning.” She watched him drive away and then went back into the drawing room.
