Dinner With The Enemy

1002 Words
The restaurant Damien took me to was nothing like the small diners near Black River Pack. Everything looked expensive. Dim golden lights glowed softly above us while quiet music played in the background. Wolves dressed in designer clothes filled the room, speaking in low voices while waiters moved around carrying plates that probably cost more than my monthly salary. I suddenly felt completely out of place. Damien noticed immediately. “You’re thinking too much,” he said calmly as we walked toward a private table near the windows. I frowned. “You can tell?” “You keep looking for the nearest exit.” Heat touched my cheeks slightly. Unfortunately, he wasn’t wrong. I sat down carefully while Damien pulled out the chair across from me. The moment he sat down, a waiter appeared beside us instantly. Clearly Damien came here often. “Your usual, Alpha?” the waiter asked respectfully. Alpha. The title still sounded intimidating every time someone said it around him. Damien nodded once before glancing toward me. “What do you want?” Honestly? I had no idea. The menu alone looked terrifying. Everything had complicated names I couldn’t pronounce properly. Damien noticed my hesitation almost immediately. Without embarrassing me, he calmly closed the menu in my hands before handing both menus back to the waiter. “Bring something light,” he said. “And tea.” The waiter nodded before disappearing again. I looked at Damien suspiciously. “What if I wanted something else?” “You looked seconds away from fighting the menu.” Despite myself, I almost smiled again. Almost. Then reality came crashing back. Pregnant. Cheated on. Rejected. My appetite disappeared instantly. Damien leaned back in his chair quietly studying me. “You’re doing that thing again.” I blinked. “What thing?” “Looking like the world ended.” I laughed bitterly. “Maybe it did.” His expression didn’t change. “No,” he said calmly. “You just thought Logan was your world.” The words hit harder than I expected. Because deep down… He was right. For years, everything in my life revolved around Logan. His schedule. His moods. His future. And now suddenly I was alone wondering how I became stupid enough to build my entire life around someone who never truly valued me. I looked down at my hands quietly. “I really loved him.” Damien stayed silent for a moment before answering. “I know.” Something about the softness in his voice almost made me emotional all over again. I quickly looked away. “I feel pathetic,” I admitted quietly. “You’re heartbroken,” Damien corrected. “There’s a difference.” The waiter returned with drinks before I could respond. The moment the food arrived, my stomach twisted painfully. Apparently Damien was right. I was starving. He noticed the second I started eating faster than intended. “One problem at a time,” he said calmly while sipping his drink. I frowned slightly. “What?” “Tonight you eat.” His dark eyes met mine steadily. “Tomorrow you panic.” A surprised laugh escaped my lips before I could stop it. Damien looked weirdly satisfied with himself. “You laugh more than I expected,” he said. “And you’re less scary than I expected.” One eyebrow lifted slowly. “Less scary,” he repeated. “Don’t ruin the moment.” That tiny almost-smile appeared again. It changed his entire face honestly. Damien Blackwood always looked cold and dangerous from a distance, but up close? He looked calmer. Sharper. More controlled. Like someone who noticed everything without speaking about it. Which somehow made him even more dangerous. I pushed my plate away slowly after finishing half the food. For the first time tonight, I actually felt slightly better. Emotionally destroyed. But physically better. Progress. Damien noticed me touching my stomach unconsciously. His eyes lowered briefly before returning to my face. “Have you seen a doctor yet?” I shook my head slowly. “I only found out today.” He nodded once thoughtfully. “You’ll need one soon.” The reminder made anxiety crawl back into my chest immediately. I wasn’t ready. I wasn’t ready to be pregnant. Definitely not alone. Fear must have shown on my face because Damien’s voice became quieter. “You’re scared.” I laughed weakly. “Very observant.” “You won’t be alone.” The words surprised me enough that I looked at him immediately. Damien seemed completely calm saying it. Like he genuinely meant it. I stared at him carefully. “Why are you being nice to me?” That question finally made him pause. For the first time all night, Damien looked uncertain about something. Then he leaned back slightly. “Maybe I hate seeing people thrown away.” Something about that answer felt personal. Before I could ask what he meant, his phone suddenly rang. Damien glanced at the screen before answering immediately. “Yes?” His expression darkened within seconds. The calm atmosphere disappeared instantly. I watched carefully while he listened silently to whoever was speaking. Then his jaw tightened. “Who approved that?” he asked coldly. Silence. “Fix it before I get there.” He ended the call sharply. The dangerous Alpha from earlier was suddenly back. I swallowed slightly. “Everything okay?” “No.” That single word carried enough weight to make me nervous. Damien stood up slowly before reaching for his wallet. “We need to leave.” My stomach tightened instantly. “Why?” He looked directly at me. “Because Logan just challenged me publicly.” I froze. “What?” Damien tossed several bills onto the table before answering calmly. “Apparently your ex-boyfriend thinks I’m trying to steal his girl.” My chest dropped. Oh God. This was bad. Very bad. And judging by the dangerous look in Damien Blackwood’s eyes… Logan had just made a massive mistake.
