Dangerous Mistake

The drive back felt tense enough to choke me. Damien kept one hand on the steering wheel while city lights flashed across his sharp features. His jaw remained tight the entire ride, and something about the dangerous silence surrounding him made my stomach twist nervously. I glanced toward him carefully. “What exactly does challenged publicly mean?” Damien didn’t answer immediately. “That depends,” he finally said calmly. “How stupid is Logan feeling tonight?” I frowned. “That doesn’t sound reassuring.” “It’s not supposed to.” Wonderful. I leaned back against the leather seat while anxiety slowly crawled through my chest again. This entire night already felt like a nightmare, and somehow it kept getting worse. First I discovered Logan was cheating. Then I found out I was pregnant. Then Damien Blackwood entered my life like some dangerous storm wrapped in an expensive suit. And now Logan had publicly challenged him. Honestly? My life was a complete disaster. “You’re overthinking again,” Damien said suddenly. I crossed my arms. “Maybe because two Alpha wolves suddenly want to kill each other because of me.” Damien glanced toward me briefly. “Trust me. Logan and I already hated each other long before you.” That somehow made me feel worse. The car finally slowed as we approached massive black security gates. They opened immediately the second Damien’s car appeared. I blinked slowly as we drove forward. “This is your house?” House felt like the wrong word. The place looked more like a fortress built for billionaires. Dark glass windows towered above us while armed guards stood near the entrance lowering their heads respectfully the moment Damien stepped out of the car. Money. Power. Control. Everything about Damien screamed all three. He closed the car door before looking at me calmly. “You’re staying here tonight.” I stared at him immediately. “Excuse me?” “You’re upset, exhausted, pregnant, and Logan is currently behaving irrationally.” His expression remained unreadable. “You’re not staying alone tonight.” “I can go home.” “You mean the apartment Logan has keys to?” I opened my mouth. Then immediately closed it again. Okay. Fair point. Still… “You seriously expect me to sleep in your house?” One side of Damien’s mouth lifted slightly. “You say that like I invited you into a dungeon.” “I barely know you.” “And yet,” he said calmly while walking toward the entrance, “you still got into my car.” Unfortunately… He had a point again. I followed him inside reluctantly, but the moment I stepped into the mansion, I froze slightly. Everything looked expensive. Dark marble floors. Massive chandeliers. Floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the city lights. The place was beautiful, but strangely cold. Like nobody actually lived there. A woman dressed formally approached immediately. “Alpha.” Damien nodded once. “Prepare the guest room.” Her eyes shifted toward me briefly before understanding flashed across her face. Right. Pack gossip definitely spread fast. “Yes, Alpha.” She disappeared upstairs quickly. I suddenly felt awkward standing there. “I’m probably causing problems for you.” Damien removed his jacket slowly before looking at me. “Trust me, trouble existed in my life long before you showed up.” Something about that answer felt strangely personal. Before I could respond, loud voices suddenly echoed from another room. Then footsteps approached quickly. A tall blond man appeared seconds later before stopping dramatically when he noticed me standing there. His eyes widened instantly. “Well,” he said slowly. “This is interesting.” Damien looked completely unimpressed. “What do you want, Ethan?” Ethan ignored him entirely while staring directly at me. “You’re the girl.” I blinked. “What girl?” “The girl Logan publicly lost his mind over twenty minutes ago.” Oh God. I closed my eyes briefly. This was humiliating. Ethan looked way too entertained by the situation. “Do you realize your ex-boyfriend nearly started a pack war tonight?” “What?” I asked immediately. Damien sighed heavily beside me like he already regretted bringing me here. Ethan pointed dramatically between Damien and me. “Apparently Logan accused Damien of stealing his mate.” Mate. The word hit me strangely. Because Logan had never called me that publicly before. Not once in three years. Damien’s expression darkened slightly. “Ethan.” “What? I’m explaining.” I swallowed hard before looking at Damien. “Logan actually said that?” “Oh, it gets worse,” Ethan continued happily. “He challenged Damien in front of half the territory.” My chest tightened instantly. “Why would he do that?” “Because men are idiots,” Ethan answered immediately. Damien looked bored. “Brilliant analysis.” Ethan ignored him again before grinning toward me. “For the record, watching Logan completely lose control was the most entertaining thing I’ve seen all year.” I honestly didn’t know how to respond to that. Everything felt unreal. Logan spent three years hiding me like some embarrassing secret. Now suddenly he was acting possessive? It made absolutely no sense. Unless… My stomach dropped painfully. Unless Logan only cared because Damien was involved. That thought hurt more than I expected. Damien must have noticed the expression on my face because his voice became quieter. “Don’t think about him tonight.” Easy for him to say. I looked down tiredly. “I’m trying not to.” For a moment, silence filled the room. Then Damien stepped closer. Not enough to scare me. Just enough that his presence suddenly felt calm compared to the chaos inside my head. “You need rest,” he said quietly. His dark eyes held mine for several seconds before he added softly: “And tomorrow…” My heart skipped strangely. “We deal with Logan.” Before I could respond, the front doors suddenly slammed open behind us. A dangerous familiar voice echoed through the mansion. “Ava!” My entire body froze. Logan. Oh no. I turned around slowly just as Logan stormed inside looking furious. His eyes landed on me instantly before shifting toward Damien standing beside me. The atmosphere changed immediately. Tense. Violent. Deadly. Logan’s jaw clenched hard enough to crack stone. “You really brought her here?” he asked coldly. Damien didn’t even blink. “You seem emotional tonight.” Big mistake. Logan growled angrily before stepping forward. “You think this is funny?” “No,” Damien said calmly. “I think you’re embarrassing yourself.” The air suddenly became heavy with Alpha pressure. My wolf whimpered nervously inside me. Ethan quietly stepped backward like he already expected violence. Smart man. Logan looked at me again, anger flashing across his face. “Get your things. We’re leaving.” Excuse me? I stared at him in disbelief. After everything tonight, he suddenly thought he could order me around? Damien spoke before I could. “She’s not going anywhere with you.” Logan’s eyes darkened dangerously. “This doesn’t concern you.” Damien’s expression remained cold. “The second you publicly accused me of stealing your mate, it became my concern.” Silence. Heavy silence. Then Logan laughed bitterly. “You want her that badly?” The room instantly became colder. Because Damien didn’t answer immediately. And suddenly… That terrified me more than anything else.
