The healer’s expression changed the moment she saw the blood.
Fear instantly consumed the entire room.
My breathing became uneven while Damien tightened his hold around me protectively. Logan stood frozen beside us, staring at the blood running slowly down my leg like his entire world had just shattered.
“No,” he whispered under his breath.
The healer immediately moved closer before placing her hands carefully against my stomach. Her face remained tense and focused while silence filled the mansion around us. Even the sounds of fighting outside suddenly felt distant compared to the panic exploding inside the room.
“Lay her down now,” she ordered quickly.
Damien didn’t hesitate.
He lifted me into his arms immediately, carrying me upstairs while Logan followed closely behind us. My body trembled violently against Damien’s chest as another painful cramp twisted through my stomach.
I was terrified.
Completely terrified.
The bedroom door slammed open as Damien carried me inside before gently placing me onto the bed. The healer immediately began opening small herbal bags while Ethan stood nervously near the doorway.
Nobody looked calm anymore.
Not even Damien.
That scared me the most.
“Please,” I whispered shakily while tears filled my eyes again. “Please save my baby.”
The healer looked toward me briefly before continuing her work. “You need to stay calm.”
“How am I supposed to stay calm?” My voice cracked instantly. “Everybody keeps looking at me like something terrible is happening.”
Another sharp pain hit suddenly, forcing a cry from my throat.
Damien immediately grabbed my hand while Logan moved closer to the other side of the bed. For one strange moment, both of them looked equally terrified.
Interesting.
The healer closed her eyes briefly while pressing both palms against my stomach. The room became silent again except for my uneven breathing and the storm outside.
Then suddenly…
Her eyes opened sharply.
“That’s not blood from the baby.”
The room froze instantly.
“What?” Logan asked quickly.
The healer slowly looked between all of us before speaking carefully.
“The child is alive.”
Relief hit me so hard I almost cried harder.
Alive.
My baby was alive.
I covered my face briefly while shaking with emotion. Beside me, Damien lowered his head slightly like tension had finally released from his body too.
But the healer still looked worried.
And that terrified me again instantly.
“What is it?” Damien asked quietly after noticing her expression.
The healer hesitated.
Then finally—
“The baby is reacting to Alpha energy.”
Silence filled the room immediately.
I frowned weakly. “What does that mean?”
Her eyes slowly shifted between Damien and Logan before answering.
“It means the child can feel conflict.”
Nobody spoke.
The healer sighed softly before continuing. “Strong emotions from powerful Alphas are affecting the pregnancy. The stress, the fighting, the dominance…” She shook her head slightly. “The baby is reacting to all of it.”
Logan cursed quietly under his breath.
Damien’s jaw tightened instantly.
I stared at both of them in disbelief.
“You’re telling me my baby is in pain because you two won’t stop fighting?”
Neither Alpha answered.
Which honestly gave me my answer immediately.
Anger slowly replaced my fear.
I pushed myself upward slightly despite the exhaustion weighing heavily on my body.
“Are you serious right now?”
“Ava—” Logan started carefully.
“No.” I looked directly at him. “Every single time you walk into a room lately, you start fighting with Damien.”
Logan looked frustrated instantly. “Because he keeps acting like—”
“I don’t care!” Emotion cracked through my voice. “I’m exhausted.”
The room went silent again.
Because this time…
I was genuinely angry.
I looked toward Damien next, breathing unevenly. “And you’re not innocent either.”
Something flickered briefly across his face.
Surprise.
Good.
“Both of you keep treating each other like enemies while I’m standing here terrified for my child.”
The healer quietly continued preparing herbs while pretending not to listen.
Ethan, however, looked painfully invested in the drama.
Typical.
Logan rubbed his face tiredly before speaking softly. “I’m trying to protect you.”
“And so am I,” Damien answered immediately.
The tension threatened to rise again instantly.
I glared at both of them so hard that even Ethan took a step backward.
“Do not start again.”
Shockingly…
They listened.
The healer handed me another herbal mixture before speaking carefully. “The baby has calmed slightly now.”
Relief flooded my chest again.
“Will the pain stop?”
“Yes,” she answered softly. “But only if the stress around you decreases.”
Every person in the room suddenly became awkwardly silent.
Because honestly?
That sounded impossible.
A loud crash echoed somewhere downstairs again, reminding everyone that wolves were still attacking the mansion.
Ethan sighed dramatically. “You know, this would all be easier if nobody was obsessed with murdering unborn supernatural children.”
Victor suddenly appeared near the doorway, covered slightly in rainwater and blood that thankfully didn’t seem to belong to him.
“The remaining wolves retreated.”
Logan immediately frowned. “Why?”
Victor looked toward me calmly.
“They got what they came for.”
Cold fear instantly crawled through my chest again.
“What does that mean?”
Victor crossed his arms. “The elders wanted confirmation.”
“Confirmation of what?” Damien asked coldly.
Victor’s expression darkened slightly.
“That the rumors are true.”
Silence crashed heavily across the room.
My stomach twisted nervously.
“What rumors?”
Victor hesitated briefly before answering.
“That the child reacted during battle.”
The healer looked uncomfortable immediately.
Logan cursed under his breath again.
I stared at all of them helplessly.
“Can somebody please explain what’s happening?”
Damien looked toward me quietly before finally speaking.
“Alpha children usually develop wolf instincts years after birth.”
I frowned slightly.
“Okay…”
Victor continued from the doorway. “Your child is already reacting emotionally from inside the womb.”
Fear slowly spread through me again.
“That’s bad?”
Nobody answered quickly enough.
Which meant yes.
Of course it was bad.
The healer carefully sat beside the bed before speaking softly. “It’s rare.”
“How rare?”
Her silence terrified me instantly.
Then finally—
“In recorded pack history? Never.”
The room became completely silent.
I stared at her in disbelief while my heartbeat pounded painfully against my chest.
Never?
My baby was the first?
That didn’t feel special.
It felt dangerous.
Very dangerous.
Logan suddenly stepped closer toward the bed again. “This changes things.”
Damien’s eyes narrowed instantly. “Meaning?”
“The elders won’t stop now.”
Victor nodded once from the doorway. “They’ll see the child as either a weapon… or a threat.”
I wrapped both arms protectively around my stomach immediately.
Nobody was taking my baby.
Nobody.
Fear must have shown clearly across my face because Damien moved closer instantly. His voice softened slightly when he spoke again.
“That won’t happen.”
Logan looked toward him sharply. “You can’t promise that.”
“Yes,” Damien answered coldly, “I can.”
The confidence in his voice filled the room immediately.
And somehow…
I believed him.
Logan noticed it too.
The quiet hurt in his expression nearly made me look away.
But before anybody could speak again, the healer suddenly frowned while touching my stomach once more.
Something changed in her expression instantly.
Confusion.
Then shock.
“What?” I asked nervously.
The healer slowly looked upward at me.
“The baby reacted again.”
Fear slammed into my chest.
“Why?”
Her eyes shifted slowly across the room.
Toward Damien.
Then quietly—
“The child calms fastest when he’s near.”
The entire room froze.
Completely.
Logan looked furious instantly.
Victor looked deeply interested now.
Ethan whispered, “Oh, this is getting messy.”
But I barely heard any of them.
Because my eyes were already locked on Damien.
And the strange expression on his face terrified me more than anything else tonight.
Because for the first time since I met him…
Damien Blackwood looked emotionally vulnerable.
