Something Was Wrong

Pain exploded through my stomach again. A sharp cry escaped my lips before I could stop it, and suddenly the entire room around me blurred. Damien caught me instantly before my knees completely gave out. “Ava.” His voice sounded different now. Panicked. Actually panicked. And somehow that terrified me even more. I grabbed his shirt tightly while trying to breathe through the pain twisting violently inside me. “It hurts.” Fear flashed openly across Logan’s face immediately. “What’s happening to her?” Victor moved closer carefully, his expression suddenly serious. “How far along is the pregnancy?” “I don’t know exactly,” I whispered weakly. Another painful cramp hit instantly. Harder. My breathing became uneven. Oh God. Something was wrong. Something was seriously wrong. Damien’s arm tightened protectively around me before he looked toward Victor sharply. “You know something.” Victor hesitated briefly. Bad sign. Very bad sign. “The mutation can react to stress.” Cold fear flooded my chest instantly. “What does that mean?” Victor looked uncomfortable answering. “It means strong emotional trauma can affect both mother and child.” Rage exploded across Logan’s face. “You should’ve said that earlier.” Victor looked equally irritated. “I didn’t expect her to be attacked tonight.” My head spun painfully while their voices blurred together around me. Everything hurt. The fear. The stress. The betrayal. It finally felt like my body was breaking under all of it. Damien suddenly lifted me into his arms carefully. The movement startled me slightly. “What are you doing?” “You’re not staying here.” His voice left absolutely no room for argument. Logan stepped forward instantly. “Where are you taking her?” “To the Crescent North medical house.” “No.” Damien’s eyes darkened immediately at Logan’s tone. “She needs protection.” “She needs her pack.” The room became dangerously silent again. And honestly? I was too exhausted to deal with another Alpha argument. “I’m right here,” I muttered weakly. Neither man answered. Typical. Another wave of pain twisted sharply through my stomach again, and this time I actually whimpered. Immediately Damien started moving toward the stairs. Fast. Careful. Protective. Ethan quickly followed behind us while Victor remained downstairs speaking quietly with the guards outside. Logan grabbed Damien’s arm suddenly before we reached the staircase. “She’s carrying my child.” Damien stopped instantly. Dangerous silence filled the room. Then slowly… He turned toward Logan. “And you failed to protect both of them.” The words hit hard. Even Logan flinched slightly. Good. Because honestly? I was too tired to defend him anymore. Damien continued upstairs without another word. The moment we entered one of the bedrooms, he gently placed me on the bed before kneeling directly in front of me. His silver eyes searched my face carefully. “Ava.” I looked at him weakly. “You need to breathe slower.” I tried. Honestly I did. But fear kept choking me from the inside. “What if something happens to the baby?” The question shattered something inside Damien’s expression instantly. “Nothing is happening to your baby.” “You don’t know that.” His jaw tightened. “No,” he admitted quietly. “But I know you’re stronger than you think.” Tears burned behind my eyes immediately. God. Why did he always know exactly what to say? Ethan entered the room carrying water and a small medical kit. “I called the healer already,” he said softly. “She’s on the way.” Relief flickered briefly through me. Then another pain hit. I grabbed Damien’s wrist instinctively. Hard. Immediately his attention snapped back toward me completely. “Look at me,” he ordered softly. I tried focusing on him while breathing shakily. “You’re okay,” he continued quietly. “Stay with me.” Something about those words calmed me slightly. Maybe it was his voice. Maybe it was the way he held my hand tightly the entire time. Or maybe… It was simply Damien. A knock sounded at the door suddenly before Logan stepped inside carefully. The moment his eyes landed on me curled painfully on the bed, guilt flooded his face instantly. “Ava…” I looked away immediately. I couldn’t do this right now. Not emotionally. Not physically. Logan stepped closer slowly. “This is my fault.” “Yes,” Damien answered coldly before I could speak. Logan ignored him completely while staring at me. “I never wanted this.” A bitter laugh escaped me despite the pain. “You never wanted any of this,” I whispered weakly. “But somehow it still happened.” The truth in those words visibly hurt him. Good. Maybe he deserved to hurt too. Logan suddenly moved closer to the bed before kneeling beside it carefully. His eyes shifted briefly toward my stomach before returning to my face again. Fear. That was what I saw there. Real fear. And strangely… That scared me too. “Please,” he whispered quietly, “don’t shut me out completely.” My chest tightened painfully. Because despite everything… Part of me still loved him. And honestly? That made me feel even more pathetic. Before I could answer, another voice suddenly interrupted from the doorway. “She needs calm, not emotional stress.” An older woman entered carrying several medical herbs and supplies. The healer. Relief flooded Ethan’s face immediately. Finally. The healer moved toward me quickly before placing gentle hands against my stomach. Her expression remained calm at first. Then suddenly… It changed. Fear flickered briefly across her face. Tiny. Quick. But I still saw it. And judging by Damien’s expression… So did he. “What?” Damien asked sharply. The healer hesitated carefully before answering. “The baby’s wolf energy is unusually active.” Cold fear crawled through my chest instantly. “What does that mean?” I whispered. The healer looked directly at me. “It means the child can already sense danger.” The room became silent. Completely silent. Even Logan stopped breathing properly beside the bed. The healer continued softly. “That level of instinct should be impossible this early.” My stomach twisted painfully again. Damien grabbed my hand tighter immediately. “She’ll survive this,” he said firmly. The healer looked at him strangely before answering quietly. “She’s stronger than normal wolves.” Something about the way she said it made fear return instantly. “What about the baby?” Logan asked sharply. The healer stayed silent too long. Way too long. Then finally— “The child is fighting.” A chill spread violently through my entire body. Fighting? Against what? The healer slowly looked between all of us before speaking again. “And if the stress continues…” She paused carefully. Then her next words shattered the room completely. “You could lose both of them.”
