A Promise Between Rivals

The tension inside Damien’s mansion became unbearable after his words. “You’re too late for that.” Logan’s eyes darkened instantly as he stared at Damien like he wanted to rip him apart right there in the living room. Rain crashed violently against the windows while thunder echoed outside, making the atmosphere even heavier. Nobody spoke for several seconds. Even Ethan looked uncomfortable now, which honestly said a lot considering he usually joked through everything. I stood near the staircase with my arms wrapped tightly around myself, trying to ignore the anxiety clawing through my chest. Everything felt out of control. The wolves attacking the mansion. The elders hunting my baby. The growing tension between Damien and Logan. And somehow, I was trapped directly in the middle of all of it. “This isn’t about you,” Logan finally growled, his voice sharp with anger. Damien remained calm. Cold. Dangerous. “No,” he answered quietly. “It’s about Ava and the child you failed to protect.” The words hit hard. I saw it immediately in Logan’s expression. Pain flashed openly across his face before anger quickly replaced it again. His jaw clenched tightly while his glowing eyes shifted toward me for one brief second. “You think hiding her here fixes everything?” he snapped. “No,” Damien replied. “But it keeps her alive.” Silence crashed heavily across the room after that. Because deep down, everybody knew Damien was right. Fear tightened painfully inside my chest again. I hated this. Hated feeling like my life had suddenly become some dangerous war between powerful men. Just a few days ago my biggest problem was discovering Logan cheated on me. Now wolves were literally hunting my unborn child. Nothing about my life made sense anymore. Logan looked toward me again, and instantly his entire expression softened. “Ava,” he said quietly, taking a careful step closer. “Come home with me.” The words caught me completely off guard. “What?” “You belong with your pack.” A bitter laugh almost escaped my throat. “My pack?” I repeated softly. “The same pack that wants my baby dead?” Pain flashed across his face immediately. “I won’t let anyone hurt you.” “You already did.” The words slipped out before I could stop them. The room fell silent instantly. Logan looked like I had physically slapped him. Guilt flooded his expression so fast that for a second I almost felt bad. Almost. “I made mistakes,” he admitted quietly. “Mistakes?” Emotion cracked through my voice immediately. “You lied to me, Logan. About everything. Your family. The mutation. The danger. You let me walk around completely blind while everybody else knew what was happening.” Fear and frustration burned painfully inside my chest. I was tired of secrets. Tired of everybody deciding what I deserved to know. Logan dragged a frustrated hand through his hair before stepping closer again. “I was trying to protect you.” “No,” Damien interrupted coldly from behind him. “You were trying to control the situation.” Logan snapped toward him immediately. “Stay out of this.” The atmosphere instantly became dangerous again. Damien slowly crossed his arms while staring at Logan with cold silver eyes. “She’s carrying a child your pack wants dead. I’m already involved.” Even Ethan muttered quietly under his breath, “Yeah… somebody’s definitely getting punched tonight.” Victor smirked from the corner like he was enjoying every second of this. Honestly, I was starting to hate him. “I’m tired,” I whispered suddenly. Immediately every person in the room stopped talking. My chest tightened painfully as exhaustion washed over me again. Not just physical exhaustion. Emotional exhaustion. Everything hurt. The betrayal. The fear. The constant fighting. “I can’t keep doing this,” I admitted softly. Logan’s expression softened instantly after hearing my voice shake. “Ava…” “I need everybody to stop deciding things for me.” Nobody spoke. Good. Because for once, I needed them to listen. I slowly looked between Damien and Logan while trying to steady my breathing. “This is my baby too,” I continued quietly. “And I’m tired of standing here while people talk about my child like I don’t matter.” Something flickered across Damien’s face immediately. Respect. Real respect. Logan looked guilty again. Victor looked thoughtful for the first time since arriving. Interesting. I took another shaky breath before speaking again. “I’m not leaving with anyone tonight.” Logan frowned immediately. “Ava—” “No.” The firmness in my voice surprised even me. “I’m staying where I feel safe.” Silence followed instantly. Then slowly, Logan’s eyes shifted toward Damien. And suddenly realization hit him completely. Because deep down, he already knew what I meant before I even said it. I felt safer here. Safer with Damien. The truth of that terrified me almost as much as it hurt Logan. He looked away briefly before laughing bitterly under his breath. “I never thought you’d trust him over me.” Something painful twisted deep inside my chest after hearing that. Because once upon a time, Logan was the person I trusted most in the world. I loved him completely. And maybe part of me still did. But somewhere along the way, things changed. The lies changed us. The betrayal changed us. And now every time I looked at him, all I could think about was how easily he hid the truth from me. Damien stayed silent beside me, but tension still radiated from him strongly. Like he was trying very hard not to say something worse. Victor finally pushed himself away from the wall before speaking calmly. “We’re wasting time.” Everybody looked toward him immediately. “The elders won’t stop searching,” he continued. “Especially now that rumors are spreading.” Fear instantly crawled back into my chest. “What rumors?” I asked quietly. Victor hesitated briefly before answering. “That the child may become stronger than any Alpha born in generations.” The room went completely silent. Even Ethan stopped moving for a second. I stared at Victor in disbelief while cold fear slowly spread through my body. “What?” Logan cursed quietly under his breath. Damien’s expression became unreadable. Victor crossed his arms casually. “The mutation isn’t just dangerous. It’s powerful.” I hated that word now. Powerful. Everybody kept saying it like it explained everything. But all I heard was danger. Fear. Death. “What exactly does that mean?” I whispered. Victor looked directly at me this time. “It means packs will either fear your child… or try to control them.” My stomach twisted painfully again. No. Nobody was controlling my baby. Nobody. Logan immediately stepped closer after noticing my expression. “I won’t let that happen.” Damien’s voice followed instantly behind him. “Neither will I.” The tension between them sharpened again immediately. Honestly, it was exhausting how similar they actually were sometimes. Both protective. Both possessive. Both willing to destroy anyone who threatened the people they cared about. The only difference was that Damien never lied to me about it. A sudden loud howl echoed outside the mansion. Every Alpha in the room immediately became alert. Fear slammed violently through my chest again. Not again. Please not again. Ethan moved carefully toward the window before peeking outside. His face darkened instantly. “We have company.” Damien’s posture changed immediately. Cold. Dangerous. Alpha. “How many?” “At least ten wolves near the western gates.” My breathing stopped. Ten? Logan cursed sharply under his breath. “They found the territory.” Victor looked completely unsurprised. “They were always going to.” Damien turned toward me immediately. “Go upstairs.” “No.” His eyes narrowed slightly. “Ava.” “I’m tired of hiding.” The words came out stronger than I expected. Silence followed instantly. Because honestly? I meant it. I was tired of being treated like something fragile while everybody else fought around me. Damien stepped closer slowly. “This isn’t a debate.” “And I’m not a prisoner.” His jaw tightened instantly. For one dangerous second, neither of us looked away. Then another howl echoed outside. Closer this time. The wolves were already approaching the mansion. Logan immediately rolled his shoulders slightly before moving toward the entrance. “I’ll handle the eastern side.” Damien’s silver eyes darkened dangerously. “You don’t give orders in my territory.” Logan looked equally furious now. “And you don’t get to act like she belongs to you.” The room froze instantly after those words. Heat rushed straight into my face. Because somehow… That argument sounded dangerously personal. Damien slowly stepped forward while staring directly at Logan. Cold. Terrifying. Protective. “She belongs to herself,” he answered quietly. My breath caught instantly. And for some reason, those four words affected me more than anything else he’d said tonight. Even Logan looked surprised. Victor suddenly laughed softly from the corner. “Well,” he murmured, “this just became complicated.” Another violent crash echoed outside. The wolves had reached the gates. Ethan partially shifted immediately, claws extending from his hands. “Okay,” he muttered nervously. “I officially miss my peaceful life.” Fear crawled painfully through me again while thunder shook the mansion loudly. Everything was happening too fast. The attacks. The pack war. The feelings growing between Damien and me that I still didn’t fully understand. And somehow… The scariest part wasn’t even the wolves outside anymore. It was the terrifying realization slowly growing inside my chest. Because deep down… I was beginning to want Damien beside me. Not because he protected me. Not because he fought for me. But because somewhere along the way… He became the only place that still felt safe.
