Regret Come Late

820 Words
I couldn’t breathe properly. The tension inside Damien’s mansion felt suffocating as both Alphas stood facing each other like one wrong word would destroy everything. And somehow… I was the center of it all. Logan’s eyes remained locked on me while guilt and anger fought openly across his face. For the first time since I met him, he actually looked nervous. Good. Maybe now he understood how badly he ruined everything. “You should calm down,” Logan said finally, his voice quieter now. I stared at him in disbelief. “Calm down?” I repeated softly. “You knew I was pregnant.” His jaw tightened immediately. “Ava, I was trying to tell you—” “When?” I cut him off sharply. “After cheating on me? After humiliating me? After telling me to get rid of our baby?” Silence. That silence told me everything. Again. Pain twisted violently through my chest, but this time it mixed with anger instead of heartbreak. Because suddenly I realized something important. Logan wasn’t sorry because he hurt me. He was sorry because he was losing control. And Damien noticed it too. “You made your choice already,” Damien said calmly beside me. “Now live with it.” Logan’s wolf pushed closer to the surface instantly. I could practically feel the aggression radiating from him. “You really think she belongs here with you?” he asked coldly. Damien remained completely relaxed. “She belongs wherever she feels safe.” Those words hit me harder than expected. Safe. I honestly couldn’t remember the last time I felt truly safe around Logan. There was always pressure. Secrets. Conditions. But standing beside Damien somehow felt different. And that terrified me. Because I barely knew him. Logan noticed my silence immediately, and something dangerous flashed across his expression. “You’re actually defending him now?” “I’m defending myself,” I answered tiredly. His face hardened instantly. “Ava, you’re emotional right now.” “There it is again,” I laughed bitterly. “That word.” “What word?” “Emotional.” My voice cracked slightly. “Every time I react to something horrible you’ve done, suddenly I’m emotional.” Logan opened his mouth to argue, but nothing came out. Because deep down… He knew I was right. Damien crossed his arms slowly beside me. “You should leave before this gets uglier.” Logan ignored him completely while staring directly at me. “You’re seriously staying here tonight?” I hesitated for half a second before nodding slowly. “Yes.” The answer clearly hurt his pride. His jaw clenched hard enough to crack stone. “You trust him more than me now?” The question caught me off guard. And honestly? That scared me too. Because after everything that happened… I didn’t know the answer anymore. Logan suddenly stepped toward me, but Damien immediately moved between us. Fast. Protective. Dangerous. The atmosphere changed instantly. “Move,” Logan growled. “No.” The single word sounded calm, but deadly. Logan laughed coldly. “You’re enjoying this way too much.” Damien’s expression didn’t change. “Watching you self-destruct? Slightly.” Okay. That definitely made things worse. Ethan muttered quietly from the corner, “Somebody should probably hide the sharp objects.” Nobody listened to him. Logan’s eyes shifted toward me again, softer this time. And honestly? That hurt more than his anger. “Ava,” he said quietly, “come home with me.” Home. The word felt strange now. Because suddenly I wasn’t sure where home even was anymore. I swallowed hard before shaking my head slowly. “No.” The pain on Logan’s face appeared so quickly it almost shocked me. But it still wasn’t enough. Not after everything. For several long seconds, nobody moved. Then Logan laughed bitterly under his breath before dragging a hand through his hair. “I really messed this up.” The quiet honesty in his voice made my chest tighten painfully. Because part of me had waited years to hear him admit it. Too bad it came after he destroyed us. Damien glanced toward me briefly before looking back at Logan. “You should go.” This time… Logan didn’t argue. His eyes stayed on me for a few more seconds before he finally spoke again. “I never wanted to hurt you.” Tears burned painfully behind my eyes. “Well,” I whispered shakily, “you did.” Something inside Logan’s expression broke completely after hearing that. Without another word, he turned around and walked toward the door. The moment it slammed shut behind him, silence filled the mansion again. Heavy. Emotional. Exhausting. I suddenly felt tired all over again. Damien looked down at me carefully. “You okay?” And for some reason… That simple question almost made me cry harder than everything else tonight.
