Unexpected Comfort

727 Words
The mansion felt strangely quiet after Logan left. For several seconds, nobody moved. Nobody spoke. The tension he brought into the room still lingered heavily in the air, making it difficult to breathe properly. I wrapped my arms around myself tightly while trying to calm the storm inside my chest. Everything hurt. My heart. My pride. My trust. And somehow the worst part wasn’t even the cheating anymore. It was the fact that Logan knew about the baby and still treated me like I meant nothing. That realization broke something inside me all over again. “You should sit down before you pass out.” Damien’s calm voice pulled me from my thoughts. I looked up slowly to find his eyes already on me. Watching carefully. Observing everything. I honestly didn’t understand him. Most powerful Alphas avoided emotional drama whenever possible. But Damien stayed. Quietly. Steadily. Like he had already decided he wasn’t leaving my side tonight. “I’m fine,” I muttered weakly. Ethan immediately snorted from the corner. “That’s definitely a lie.” I shot him a tired look. He raised both hands innocently. “Just saying.” Damien ignored Ethan completely before stepping closer to me again. “You’re shaking.” I looked down. He was right. My hands trembled slightly from stress and exhaustion. Embarrassing. “I said I’m okay.” “And I said you’re not.” Something about the firmness in Damien’s voice made my chest tighten strangely. Not because it scared me. Because it felt safe. And honestly? I didn’t know what to do with that feeling. Damien glanced toward Ethan without looking away from me. “Go away.” Ethan blinked dramatically. “Wow. That’s rude.” “Leave.” Ethan sighed heavily before pointing toward me. “If she falls in love with you because you’re acting protective, I want credit.” I nearly choked. Damien looked completely unimpressed. “Get out.” Still grinning, Ethan finally disappeared upstairs. Silence returned almost immediately. Dangerous silence. The kind that suddenly made me aware of everything. How close Damien was standing. How warm his hand felt when it brushed against my arm briefly. How carefully he looked at me, like he was trying to solve a puzzle. I swallowed nervously before looking away first. “You didn’t have to defend me.” Damien stayed quiet for a second. “Yes,” he finally said softly. “I did.” My heartbeat stumbled slightly. I frowned at him. “Why?” For the first time since meeting him… Damien hesitated. That surprised me more than anything else tonight. Then he sighed quietly before answering. “Because someone should.” The simple honesty in his voice nearly destroyed me. I looked down quickly before tears could return again. God. I was tired of crying. But tonight felt like every emotion inside me had finally broken loose at once. Damien suddenly reached toward me slowly. My entire body froze. But instead of touching me, his fingers gently lifted a strand of hair away from my face. The movement was soft. Careful. Almost hesitant. And somehow that tiny action affected me more than Logan’s grand gestures ever had. “You deserve better than him,” Damien said quietly. My chest tightened painfully. “Please stop saying things like that.” His eyebrows pulled together slightly. “Why?” “Because I might start believing you.” The room became silent again. But this silence felt different. Softer. More dangerous. Damien looked at me for several long seconds before speaking again. “Maybe you should.” My breath caught. For one terrifying moment, it felt like the entire world disappeared around us. No Logan. No pack drama. No betrayal. Just Damien standing too close while looking at me like I was something important. And that scared me more than anything else. Because part of me liked it. A little too much. Then suddenly— My phone rang loudly. The sound shattered the moment instantly. I stepped backward quickly while my heart pounded uncontrollably. Damien’s expression changed immediately, becoming unreadable again. I looked down at the screen. Jessica Hart. Of course. I almost ignored it. But then another message appeared underneath the call. Jessica Hart: If you care about your baby, meet me tomorrow. My blood turned cold. Because somehow… That sounded like a threat.
