I stared at the message for several seconds without breathing properly.
If you care about your baby, meet me tomorrow.
Every word felt wrong.
Cold.
Threatening.
My fingers tightened instinctively around the phone while anxiety crawled slowly through my chest.
Damien noticed my expression immediately.
“What happened?”
I looked up too quickly.
“Nothing.”
The lie sounded terrible even to me.
His eyes narrowed slightly. “Ava.”
God.
Why did he notice everything?
I swallowed nervously before handing him the phone silently.
Damien read the message once.
And suddenly the entire atmosphere around him changed.
His jaw tightened.
His eyes darkened dangerously.
“Jessica sent this?”
I nodded slowly.
For a second, Damien said nothing.
Which honestly felt more terrifying than anger.
Then he looked back at me carefully.
“You’re not meeting her alone.”
The answer came too quickly.
“I’m not scared of Jessica.”
“That’s the problem.” His voice stayed calm. “You should be.”
A chill ran down my spine instantly.
Because Damien wasn’t the type to exaggerate.
If he considered something dangerous…
Then it probably was.
I crossed my arms tightly. “She’s just trying to intimidate me.”
“Maybe.”
The single word didn’t comfort me at all.
Damien handed the phone back before walking toward the large windows near the living room.
For several quiet seconds, he remained silent while staring outside into the dark night.
Thinking.
Planning.
Calculating.
Then finally—
“She knows about the baby too early.”
I frowned immediately. “What does that mean?”
Damien turned toward me slowly.
“It means Logan told her.”
Pain twisted sharply through my chest again.
Of course he did.
Why was I even surprised anymore?
Every private thing between us eventually became entertainment for Jessica.
Humiliating.
Damien studied my face carefully before speaking again.
“Did Logan ever tell the pack officially about your relationship?”
I blinked.
“No.”
“Did he mark you?”
The question caught me off guard.
Heat rose instantly to my face.
“No.”
Something dangerous flickered briefly across Damien’s expression before disappearing again.
Interesting.
Very interesting.
Because suddenly I realized what he was actually asking.
Logan kept me hidden.
For three years.
No official title.
No mark.
No public acknowledgment.
Nothing.
The painful truth settled heavily inside my chest.
I was never truly important to him.
I looked away quickly before Damien could read the hurt on my face again.
Unfortunately…
He already had.
“He’s an i***t,” Damien said flatly.
A shocked laugh escaped me before I could stop it.
“You really hate him.”
Damien looked unimpressed. “That would imply effort.”
Despite everything happening, another small laugh escaped me.
And somehow…
That tiny sound softened his expression immediately.
Dangerous.
Again.
Everything about this man felt dangerous lately.
My phone suddenly vibrated again.
Another message from Jessica.
Jessica Hart:
Come alone if you want the truth.
I frowned instantly.
The truth?
What truth?
Before I could think too deeply about it, Damien took the phone from my hand again.
This time his expression became colder.
“You’re definitely not going.”
I folded my arms stubbornly. “You can’t stop me.”
One of his eyebrows lifted slightly.
“Want to test that theory?”
My heartbeat stumbled embarrassingly fast.
Seriously?
Why was that attractive?
I cleared my throat quickly while looking away.
“That sounded controlling.”
“It was controlling.”
I stared at him.
He stared back completely unapologetic.
And somehow that made my stomach flip nervously.
This was bad.
Very bad.
Because part of me was starting to enjoy the way Damien acted protective around me.
A dangerous silence settled between us again before Damien finally sighed softly.
“Get some sleep.”
I frowned. “After receiving creepy threats?”
“You’re exhausted.”
He stepped closer slowly before lowering his voice slightly.
“And stress isn’t good for the baby.”
The gentle concern in his tone caught me completely off guard.
Because Logan barely acted concerned at all.
But Damien—
Damien remembered.
Every single time.
My chest tightened painfully at the difference.
I looked down quietly. “Why are you being nice to me?”
For the first time all night…
Damien looked genuinely surprised by the question.
Then something softer appeared in his eyes.
“You really don’t know?”
My breath caught instantly.
The way he said those words felt dangerous.
Too intimate.
Too personal.
Before I could respond, footsteps suddenly echoed from upstairs.
Ethan appeared holding a bag of chips while looking entirely too awake for midnight.
He glanced between both of us slowly before grinning.
“Oh wow.”
I immediately stepped away from Damien.
Ethan’s grin widened.
“Okay,” he said casually, “something definitely happened down here.”
“Nothing happened,” I said too quickly.
Ethan looked delighted.
“That response alone tells me everything.”
