Jealousy Looks Good On Him

702 Words
Ethan’s grin widened as he looked between Damien and me suspiciously. “Oh,” he said slowly, “something definitely happened down here.” “Nothing happened,” I answered too quickly. Ethan looked delighted immediately. “That response alone tells me everything.” I groaned softly while Damien looked completely unimpressed. “You should sleep,” Damien told Ethan flatly. Ethan clutched his chest dramatically. “Why does everyone in this house hate happiness?” “Nobody hates happiness,” Damien replied calmly. “Just you.” I accidentally laughed. A real laugh this time. And the moment the sound escaped me, both men looked at me. Ethan appeared shocked. “Well,” he muttered, “that’s the first genuine smile I’ve seen tonight.” My cheeks warmed slightly. Embarrassing. Especially because Damien’s eyes stayed on me a second longer than necessary before finally looking away. Dangerous. Everything about this situation felt dangerous. Ethan eventually disappeared back upstairs after mumbling something about “emotionally intense rich wolves,” leaving Damien and me alone again. Silence settled between us almost immediately. But somehow it didn’t feel awkward anymore. That honestly scared me. Because getting comfortable around Damien Blackwood felt like the beginning of a very bad decision. “You should rest,” Damien said quietly. I nodded slowly before turning toward the stairs. But halfway there, I stopped. Because suddenly one terrifying thought hit me. “What if Jessica is right?” Damien’s expression hardened instantly. “She isn’t.” “What if Logan really regrets everything?” The words hurt to say out loud. Because despite everything… Part of me still loved him. Or maybe I loved the version of him I thought existed. Damien studied me carefully for several long seconds before answering. “Regret doesn’t erase betrayal.” The simple honesty in his voice hit harder than expected. I looked down quietly. Because deep inside… I knew he was right. Still, moving on felt impossible. Three years wasn’t something you erased overnight. Especially not when a baby was involved. Damien walked toward me slowly until he stood directly in front of me again. Too close. Way too close. “You don’t have to decide anything right now,” he said softly. I looked up at him. His dark eyes held mine steadily, and suddenly my heartbeat became impossible to control again. God. Why did he always look at me like that? Like he saw more than everyone else. Like he understood things I never said out loud. “You make me nervous,” I admitted quietly before thinking. The corner of Damien’s mouth lifted slightly. “Good.” I blinked at him. “That’s not reassuring.” “It wasn’t meant to be.” I should have walked away. Seriously. I should have gone upstairs immediately. Instead, I stayed standing there staring at him while tension built slowly between us again. The dangerous kind. The kind that made my stomach flutter nervously. Then suddenly— A loud knock echoed through the mansion. Both of us turned toward the front door instantly. Damien’s expression darkened immediately. “At this hour?” I whispered. Another knock came. Harder this time. Ethan’s voice echoed from upstairs. “If that’s Logan again, I’m fighting somebody.” Damien ignored him completely while moving toward the entrance. Something inside me twisted anxiously as I followed behind him. The moment Damien opened the door, cold night air rushed inside. Then my entire body froze. Jessica Hart stood outside. Alone. And judging by the expression on her face… Something was very wrong. Her eyes landed on me instantly before she spoke. “You’re in danger.” The words hit me so unexpectedly that I genuinely forgot how to breathe. Damien stepped slightly in front of me immediately. “What are you talking about?” Jessica looked nervous. Actually nervous. And suddenly that terrified me more than anything else tonight. She looked directly at me again. “There’s something Logan didn’t tell you about the baby.” My heart stopped. Completely. “What?” Jessica swallowed hard before answering quietly. “The child you’re carrying…” She paused. Then her next words shattered everything. “Isn’t normal.”
