Chapter 2:The Announcement

502 Words
The bell rang, and the chatter in the classroom slowly faded. Michelle shifted in her seat, glancing at the clock. Every minute in that room felt like an eternity when the whispers never stopped. Mrs. Daniels, the science teacher, entered with a stack of papers in her hands. Her heels clicked sharply against the floor, silencing the last murmurs. She placed the papers on the desk and gave the class a warm but authoritative smile. “Good morning, class,” she said. “I have an announcement.” The room fell completely silent. Michelle’s pulse quickened. Announcements were usually routine, but something about Mrs. Daniels’ tone made her attention sharpen. “Our school will be hosting the Annual Science Fair next month,” Mrs. Daniels continued. “This year, I want creativity, innovation, and projects that can make a real difference for our school or community.” A ripple of excitement and curiosity swept through the students. Some exchanged whispers, wondering what they would build, while others groaned about the work ahead. Michelle’s mind raced. Science had always been her escape, the place where she could shine quietly without anyone noticing. She imagined the possibilities, the machines she could build, the programs she could code. Her hands itched to start designing. “This project will count as a major grade,” Mrs. Daniels added. “And the winner will receive a recommendation for a scholarship opportunity.” Gasps of excitement echoed through the room. Michelle’s heart skipped a beat. This was it. Her chance to show that her talents were real. During lunch, Michelle found a quiet corner in the cafeteria, sketchbook in hand. She began sketching ideas: small motors, conveyor belts, sensors. A smart recycling robot emerged in her imagination—a machine that could sort paper, plastic, and metal effortlessly. Her classmates noticed and, predictably, the teasing began. “A robot?” one girl snickered. “You? Michelle, you can barely speak in class.” Another added, “Yeah, don’t embarrass yourself. You’ll probably just break it.” Michelle clenched her fists under the table. Normally, their words would have stung, but today she felt something new—determination. She had the knowledge, the ideas, and now a goal that mattered. After school, she hurried home, already thinking about the parts she could scavenge from old gadgets, and the code she could write. She opened her laptop, pulled up her programming software, and began to prototype. Hours passed unnoticed. The hum of the computer and the faint smell of solder filled the room. Every small success made her smile. Every mistake taught her a lesson. Slowly, the robot began to take shape in both her sketches and her mind. As night fell, Michelle lay in bed, staring at the ceiling. The whispers from school were still there in her memory, but they felt smaller, weaker. The fire of ambition had replaced the fear. Tomorrow, I start building, she thought. And I won’t stop until they see what I can do.
