7 At Alice Springs Police Station, Russell Foley and Sam Rose, along with a small team of fellow detectives, stood crowded around a large map posted on a wall at one end of the Major Crime Squad’s incident room. The map depicted the isolated central Australian area south of Alice Springs, covering the south-eastern desert area to as far south as the South Australian border. A number of photographs displaying the crime scenes of the Watson family and the Susan Chambers murders were pinned to the wall on either side of the map—the Watson family on the left and Susan Chambers on the right.
