Three Months to Get Pregnant

Yvonne sneered. What a perfect white lotus. Too bad, in front of her, Fiona was nothing more than a clown. "Nancy is Lucas’s wife, the daughter-in-law of the Lu family. What makes you think you can compare yourself to her?" "Spending Lucas’s money is her right. Not just Lucas’s money—she could spend the entire Lu family fortune, and it still wouldn’t run out. She can use as much as she wants." "As for gifts, even if she gave Grandpa a leaf, he’d treasure it like a gem. But if you gave him a golden leaf, he wouldn’t appreciate it. You’d just be humiliating yourself." Fiona was about to speak when Lucas grabbed her wrist and gave Nancy a meaningful look. Nancy’s heart ached with bitterness. But she immediately linked arms with Yvonne and said with a bright smile, "Mom, Lucas and I are picking out a gift for Grandpa. Since you’re here, help us choose!" Nancy’s tone was warm and gentle. Yvonne’s voice softened considerably. "Actually, there’s not much to choose from. Grandpa doesn’t lack anything. Don’t you know what he wants?" Of course, Nancy knew. But she also knew Lucas didn’t want it. So, in front of her mother-in-law, she had to play dumb. Yvonne looked directly at Lucas. "Don’t tell me you don’t know. The gift Grandpa wants most is a great-grandchild." Just mentioning this made Yvonne furious. "Look at you. It’s been two years, and Nancy’s stomach hasn’t shown any signs of life. If this goes on, I’m going to start doubting you." Nancy: "..." This was truly her mother-in-law—immediately suspecting her own son. If it were any other mother-in-law, they’d blame her for being infertile or having a weak body. So Nancy felt a warm, comforting sensation in her heart. "Mom, this is a public place. At least give me some face," Lucas said, rubbing his temples with a troubled expression. "You know you need face, but what about me? Every time I’m at those social gatherings with the other ladies, and they ask me if I have a grandchild, I just want to crawl into a hole." Nancy felt embarrassed. Her face turned red. "Before, I always thought you were young and wanted to give you more time, so I never interfered." "But this time, Lucas, listen carefully. I’m giving you three months. If Nancy’s stomach still doesn’t show any signs of life, I’m holding you accountable." "Mom, this is completely unreasonable. Can’t you be a little more fair?" Lucas looked utterly distressed. "I’m being unreasonable, am I? If there’s no pregnancy in three months, both of you are going to the hospital for a checkup." Yvonne then turned to Nancy. "These next few months, you keep an eye on him. If he’s not proactive or cooperative, report to me immediately." Nancy’s face was so red it looked like it might drip blood. She nodded quickly. "Okay, Mom." Fiona, standing to the side, was beyond awkward. She bit her lip pitifully, clenched her fists, and looked both angry and heartbroken. If she hadn’t been holding back, she would’ve blurted out the fact that Lucas and Nancy were planning to divorce. When Yvonne left, both Lucas and Fiona breathed a sigh of relief. "Lucas, you’re not really going to have a child with her, are you?" Fiona looked at Lucas with a pitiful expression, appearing as fragile as possible. Nancy silently pursed her lips. Maybe this was the type of woman men liked—fragile, pitiful, and able to fully ignite their protective instincts. Even someone as extraordinary as Lucas wasn’t immune to it. "No," Lucas answered decisively. "Since we’ve already decided to divorce, I won’t leave this kind of complication behind." Hearing this, Fiona finally relaxed. She then turned to Lucas, gently brushing her hair back, and said softly, "Lucas, come shopping with me. I want to buy some clothes." Suddenly, time seemed to freeze. Nancy stared at the jade earrings on Fiona’s ears, feeling as if she’d been struck by lightning. She stood there, stunned. She couldn’t describe the feeling in her heart, but it was incredibly painful. She looked at Fiona and asked in a voice so soft it was almost inaudible, "Can I ask where you bought those earrings?" Fiona brushed her hair back again, revealing the earrings with a smile. "You mean these?" "Yes," Nancy clenched her hands tightly. "I didn’t buy them. I saw them at Lucas’s place the other day and thought they were really beautiful. I liked them, so he gave them to me." Nancy bit her lip, her heart aching. So, this was the "little incident" Lucas had mentioned. She thought there had been some issue with the gift, that it couldn’t be bought. But it turned out Fiona liked them, so he gave them to her. Yet, he had already promised them to her. Just because Fiona said she liked them, he gave them away without hesitation. This was the difference between being loved and not being loved. "Nancy—" Lucas started to speak, but Nancy immediately cut him off. "No need to explain. I understand." Since he’d already done it, what was the point of explaining? Suppressing her pain, she said calmly, "Should we still pick out a gift for Grandpa?" "Next time. Fiona isn’t feeling well today, so I’ll stay with her. I’ll have the driver take you home." "Okay." Sitting in the car, Nancy looked out at the passing scenery, but her mood had already hit rock bottom. "A great-grandchild?" She murmured softly, placing her hands gently on her stomach, protecting it. Over the years, they hadn’t been intimate often, and almost every time, Lucas had taken contraceptive measures. He’d even reminded her to take long-term birth control pills. So, they’d always been using double protection. Under these circumstances, the chances of getting pregnant were almost nonexistent. If the doctor hadn’t told her she was pregnant, she wouldn’t have dared to believe it. But Lucas called it a "complication." That word pierced her heart like a needle, instantly drawing blood. In his eyes, their child was just a complication. Nancy covered her face, unable to hold back her tears any longer. As soon as she got home, she received a call from her mother-in-law. "Are you home?" Yvonne got straight to the point. "Yes, I just got back." "Good. I’ll be there in ten minutes." Nancy was about to say something, but Yvonne had already hung up. If she remembered correctly, this was the first time Yvonne had visited her and Lucas’s new home since their wedding. Nancy felt nervous and quickly instructed the servants to prepare. Since she didn’t interact much with her mother-in-law and didn’t know her preferences well, Nancy called Lucas to ask about them. "Hello, Lucas!" "Nancy, it’s me." Hearing Fiona’s voice, Nancy’s voice trembled. Suppressing the bitterness in her heart, she continued, "Where’s Lucas? I need to talk to him about something." "Sorry, he’s not available right now. I’ll have him call you back later." With that, Fiona hung up. Nancy held the phone, feeling dazed and stunned. If she remembered correctly, Lucas had said that as long as they weren’t divorced, he’d be mindful of his boundaries and remember he was married. But now, what was he doing being so close to Fiona? It seemed he couldn’t wait anymore. If it weren’t for Grandpa, they would’ve already gotten their divorce papers this morning and become complete strangers. Since she didn’t know her mother-in-law’s preferences well, Nancy had the servants prepare everything they could think of. Coffee, tea, fruit, pastries, nuts—anything they had at home, she had them prepare. She even had lunch prepared. Both Chinese and Western dishes were ready. After all this, Nancy waited at home for Yvonne’s arrival. When she heard the doorbell, Nancy went to open it herself. She greeted Yvonne with a smile, polite and respectful. "Mom, you’re here—" Before she could finish, Nancy covered her mouth and ran to the bathroom, vomiting violently
