"Nancy, who told you to use that tone—"
Before Lucas could finish his sentence, the driver suddenly slammed on the brakes.
Nancy was thrown into Lucas’s arms, her vision blurring from the impact.
Luckily, Lucas shielded her head with his hand, or she might have really gotten hurt.
The driver kept apologizing: "I’m sorry, Mr. Lu."
"Focus on driving."
Lucas coldly tossed out those words, then turned to Nancy: "Who told you to use that tone?"
"Hubby, you’re the one who told me to beg you!"
Nancy continued in a soft, coquettish voice.
After so many years of marriage, this was almost the first time she had acted cute with Lucas.
Before, she had been afraid he wouldn’t like it, afraid he’d think she was being too dramatic, so she had always held back.
Now that they were about to divorce, she felt bolder.
Even if he didn’t like it, it would be the last time anyway.
"Sit properly," Lucas said to Nancy.
Nancy immediately sat up straight.
"Speak properly from now on," he added.
"Okay."
He seemed extremely dissatisfied with Nancy’s response: "What do you mean, ‘okay’? Did you hear me?"
"I heard you."
"Hearing isn’t enough. The key is to remember."
"Especially don’t use that tone with other men," Lucas added.
After saying that, he couldn’t help but curse himself under his breath: "Lucas, what are you doing? You’re going crazy!"
You’re about to get divorced. After the divorce, she can act cute with whoever she wants. Can you control that?
Frustrated, he loosened his tie, finally feeling like he could breathe again.
While applying the medication, Lucas’s movements were gentle and soft.
His fingertips lightly brushed the skin on the back of Nancy’s neck, like feathers, tickling her.
Especially his breath, which fell on her soft earlobe, was indescribably seductive.
Nancy couldn’t help but shiver slightly.
Lucas’s fingers also trembled.
His eyes were deep, making it hard to discern his emotions.
Finally, after applying the medication, Nancy breathed a sigh of relief.
At a traffic light, Lucas suddenly spoke.
"Turn left, to the mall."
Nancy was puzzled: "Aren’t you going to the company today?"
"Grandpa’s birthday has been moved up. We haven’t prepared a gift yet."
With that explanation, Nancy immediately understood and nodded: "I’ll go with you."
They went straight to the jewelry floor. As soon as they arrived at the store, a soft voice called out: "Lucas!"
Nancy turned around and saw Fiona.
Instantly, she was stunned.
If she hadn’t seen it with her own eyes, she wouldn’t have believed it.
Because she clearly saw that Fiona was in a wheelchair.
How?
Her legs?
She had never heard that Fiona was disabled. Wasn’t she a dancer?
Nancy felt as if she had been struck by lightning, standing there in a daze, unable to react for a long time.
Until Lucas spoke: "Why are you here? The mall’s air conditioning is strong. Aren’t you cold wearing so little?"
As he spoke, he took off his coat and draped it over Fiona.
She looked at Nancy apologetically: "Actually, I’m not cold. He’s just too nervous, afraid I’ll catch a cold."
Those words were clearly meant for Nancy to hear.
Nancy lowered her head and remained silent.
Fiona then looked at Lucas: "I heard Grandpa’s birthday has been moved up. I wanted to pick a gift for him. Since you’re here, you know what Grandpa likes. Can you help me choose?"
"Sure!"
Fiona immediately smiled happily, like a gentle little woman.
"Xiao Man, I’m a bit thirsty. Get me some water."
"Oh, miss, I’m sorry. The thermos is empty. I’ll call someone to bring a bottle."
Lucas immediately spoke up: "How long will that take? I’ll go get it. You two wait here."
Then he looked at Nancy: "I’ll be right back."
"Okay," Nancy nodded.
After Lucas left, Fiona also sent Xiao Man away.
In an instant, only she and Fiona were left.
Nancy moved her lips, about to speak, but Fiona beat her to it: "He’s always like this. Anything related to me, no matter how small, he takes care of it personally."
"I’ve told him before that he can leave it to his assistant, but Lucas says he doesn’t trust anyone else."
Although Nancy didn’t want to hear about their affection, those words still seeped into her mind.
Lucas was indeed very attentive.
In their two years of marriage, he had never missed her birthday, anniversaries, or holidays.
But every time, he had Leo handle it.
He had never personally arranged anything.
Yet, for something as simple as getting hot water for Fiona’s thermos, he had to do it himself.
Indeed, without comparison, there would be no hurt.
Nancy, Nancy, you’ve lost completely.
After a moment of silence, Fiona spoke first: "Shall we talk?"
"Sure," Nancy nodded.
Seeing her staring at her legs, Fiona took the initiative: "It seems you really didn’t know."
Nancy shook her head: "I’ve never heard about it. What happened to your legs? Lucas never told me."
"Of course Lucas didn’t tell you," Fiona’s tone became emotional.
Perhaps realizing this, she took a deep breath and quickly controlled her emotions: "Sorry, I got a bit carried away."
"Not just Lucas, but probably no one in the Lu family dared to tell you."
"Why?"
"Grandpa Lu is the absolute authority in the family. If he gives an order, who would dare to disobey?"
Seeing Nancy’s confusion, Fiona continued.
"The Lu family has protected you too well, especially Grandpa Lu. Nancy, do you know, even though you come from a modest background with no family connections, you’re so lucky.
"Grandpa Lu treats you like his own granddaughter. Just because your mother saved their lives? Sometimes I even wonder, if it had been my mother who saved them, would the outcome have been different? Would I have been able to marry Lucas as I wished?"
Nancy felt a sense of foreboding.
For some reason, she felt that something she didn’t know was slowly unraveling, layer by layer.
"What do you mean by that?"
Nancy’s breathing became a bit rapid.
"Back then, Grandpa Lu was determined to bring you and Lucas together. He wanted Lucas to marry you, but Lucas never agreed. They were at a stalemate for a long time. But Lucas was young, and all the power in the Lu family was in Grandpa Lu’s hands. He used every means to pressure Lucas, and in the end, Lucas couldn’t resist and was forced to marry you."
"No, you’re lying."
Nancy suddenly became defensive, like a hedgehog.
She couldn’t accept that her marriage was the result of a shameful coercion.
Fiona smiled helplessly: "What I’m saying is the truth. Lucas married you back then to protect me."
