Lucas looked up at her. “Are you sure you want a hundred million?”
“Having second thoughts?” Nancy sneered at him.
“If that’s really what you’re asking for, I’ll agree to it,” Lucas said.
Furious, Nancy tore the divorce agreement in her hands to shreds and threw the pieces in front of Lucas.
“I’ve truly failed. In your eyes, I’m just a gold-digger who only cares about money and property.”
“Do you love Fiona so much that you’d give me a hundred million without blinking an eye, just for her sake?”
“This has nothing to do with Fiona. I’ve said it before—as long as your demands aren’t excessive, I’ll do my best to fulfill them. I’m the one who ended the agreement early. I’m the one who breached the contract. Since you want money, I’ll give it to you.”
Nancy looked at him and suddenly burst into laughter.
She clenched her fists, laughing until tears streamed down her face. “Since you’ve already made up your mind, there’s no point in me explaining anything.”
“Just leave. I don’t want to see you.”
After Lucas left, Leo cautiously walked in.
Nancy glared at him, her anger evident. “What are you doing here?”
Leo placed the documents he was carrying one by one on the table and looked at Nancy. “Mr. Lu had me print five copies and also sent you the digital version. He said to have you sign them once you’ve calmed down.”
Nancy grabbed a pen and signed the documents without even glancing at them.
She threw them back at Leo. “Tell him I don’t want a single penny of his money.”
When she had entered the Lu family, she hadn’t brought a single cent.
When she left, she wouldn’t take a single cent either.
After receiving the signed divorce agreement, Leo immediately called Lucas. “Mr. Lu, Mrs. Lu has signed it.”
“She signed it?”
Seemingly surprised by how smoothly it had gone, Lucas was taken aback.
“Did she say anything?”
“Mrs. Lu said she doesn’t want a single penny of your money,” Leo replied truthfully.
After hanging up, Lucas rubbed his temples in frustration.
For some reason, he suddenly felt restless and irritable.
Across from him, Fiona smiled gently and asked, “Lucas, what did you just say was signed?”
“The divorce agreement,” he replied flatly.
Fiona was stunned. “You mean she’s agreed to the divorce and has already signed it?”
“Yes.”
“That’s wonderful, Lucas. After all these years, we can finally be together openly.” Fiona stood up and happily hugged him.
But Lucas seemed disinterested. For some reason, hearing that Nancy had signed so readily and without hesitation didn’t bring him the joy and relief he had expected.
“I’m going to the restroom.”
Gently pushing Fiona aside, Lucas stepped outside and lit a cigarette.
As the smoke rose, his sharp features became blurred in the haze.
She signed it so willingly.
She must be eager to reunite with her beloved.
The thought that he, Lucas, couldn’t compare to a divorced older man in her heart left him feeling utterly defeated.
When Leo delivered the divorce agreement, Fiona happened to be there.
“Give it to me. I’ll hand it to Lucas later.”
Thinking that Mr. Lu was about to marry her, Leo didn’t hesitate and handed it over.
When Fiona saw the property division and the assets Lucas had given to Nancy, she clenched her fists tightly.
So much wealth?
It was more than most people could dream of in several lifetimes.
And Lucas had just handed it over with a stroke of his pen.
Nancy had entered the Lu family without bringing a single cent, so why should she walk away with so much now? Fiona seethed with resentment.
The next day, as Nancy was packing up to leave the hospital, an unexpected visitor arrived.
“What are you doing here?” she asked, her tone cold as she looked at Fiona.
Remembering the purpose of her visit, Fiona forced a gentle smile. “Let’s have a drink. I want to apologize to you.”
Fiona apologizing to her?
Impossible.
Nancy immediately realized it was a trap.
At the coffee shop downstairs, Fiona ordered a latte and turned to Nancy. “What would you like?”
“Just a glass of water.”
Fiona’s face stiffened with embarrassment, feeling that Nancy was deliberately provoking her.
“If you have something to say, say it. I don’t have time to waste here,” Nancy said directly.
“I admit I went too far with what I said last time. Please don’t take it to heart.”
“And what if I do?”
Caught off guard by Nancy’s bluntness, Fiona paused but quickly recovered with a smile. “Then I sincerely apologize. I’m sorry, Nancy. I never meant to hurt you.”
This apology was as insincere as a fox offering condolences to a chicken.
A woman like Fiona wouldn’t apologize without an ulterior motive.
“Get to the point, or I’m leaving.”
Panicking, Fiona quickly grabbed Nancy’s arm and pulled something out of her bag, placing it in front of her.
Another divorce agreement?
When Nancy saw the words, she sneered. “I’ve already signed it. What? You don’t trust me and want me to sign it again in front of you?”
“No.”
Fiona smiled. “I just thought there was a small issue with the property division, so I made a slight adjustment. I’d like you to sign it again.”
A slight adjustment?
Nancy glanced at her and picked up the agreement.
When she saw that the compensation had been reduced from ten million to one million, she laughed. “Did you make this change, or did Lucas?”
Fiona had expected her to be furious but was surprised by her calmness.
“I made the change.”
Nancy looked down at her. “Does Lucas know? Are you sure he’d agree?”
“Of course. My words are his words.”
“If that’s the case, why didn’t you tell him? Why are you going behind his back to bring this to me? Fiona, you’re the daughter of the Fang family. Even if you’ve lost your pride, at least you still have some dignity. But now, you’re so desperate for money that you’ll stoop to anything. You’re completely consumed by greed.”
Nancy’s words left Fiona fuming.
“And what about you? You came into the Lu family without a single cent, not even a dowry. Why should you walk away with so much now?”
“Who told you I didn’t have a dowry?”
Fiona sneered. “With your poor mother and gambling-addicted father, what kind of dowry could they give you? Even if they did, it must have been pitifully meager.”
Nancy raised her wrist, pointing to the jade bracelet she wore. “Oh? You mean this ‘meager’ dowry?”
When Fiona saw the bracelet, her eyes widened in shock. “Impossible! How did you get that bracelet?”
“When my mother saved Mr. Lu and Grandpa Lu years ago, Grandpa personally gave it to her as a token. Later, when I married Lucas, Grandpa said this was my dowry. It belongs to me for life and will never go to anyone else.”
Fiona staggered, Nancy’s words hitting her like a bucket of ice water.
She recognized the bracelet, of course.
It was a family heirloom of the Lu family, passed down only to the wives of the Lu family.
Grandpa Lu had even given this to her? No wonder she was so confident.
But Fiona was no stranger to adversity. After steadying herself, she made a bold decision. “Nancy, let’s make a deal.”
