The Divorce Agreement

When Nancy woke up, the ceiling above her was a stark white, and the air was filled with the sharp scent of disinfectant. Lucas sat nearby. Seeing her awake, he strode over. “How are you feeling? Still in pain?” “A little better.” Her face was pale, her lips almost colorless. “I had someone warm some porridge for you. Have some.” Lucas opened the thermal container, his slender fingers ladling out pumpkin porridge—Nancy’s favorite. “I don’t want any.” She shook her head. Lucas carried the bowl over anyway. “You just woke up, and you haven’t eaten since last night. Your body is weak. How will you recover if you don’t eat?” “Your husband is right. You need to replenish your nutrients now,” the doctor said as he walked in, dressed in a white coat. Nancy immediately sat up straight upon seeing the doctor. She turned to Lucas. “I’d like some bananas. Could you buy some for me?” “I’ll have Leo get them,” Lucas replied. Nancy frowned slightly. “I want ones you pick out yourself.” “Alright, I’ll go.” Once she was sure he had left, Nancy turned to the doctor. “Doctor, my baby…” Her voice trembled, and she couldn’t bring herself to finish the question. The doctor smiled kindly. “Don’t worry. Both you and the baby are very lucky. The baby is still safe and sound, sleeping peacefully in your womb.” “Really?” Nancy’s face lit up with joy. The tension and sorrow she had felt earlier vanished instantly. Overwhelmed with happiness, tears streamed down her face as she laughed. “That’s wonderful. Thank you, doctor!” “It’s my duty. The baby is safe for now, but you mustn’t let your guard down, especially during the first three months. Avoid any dangerous movements, and try to stay happy. When you’re happy, the baby will be happy too.” “Yes, I’ll remember what you’ve said,” Nancy nodded earnestly. “And don’t forget to attend your prenatal checkups on time.” “I will.” Glancing at the pumpkin porridge on the table, the doctor added, “Make sure to eat your meals regularly. If you don’t eat, how will the baby get nutrients? Remember, for the baby to be healthy, you must be healthy first.” “I understand. I’ll make sure to eat on time from now on.” The doctor hesitated. “Your husband seems very caring and attentive. Are you sure you don’t want to tell him about the pregnancy?” In the emergency room, Nancy had clutched the doctor’s sleeve, pleading, “Doctor, the man waiting outside is my husband. He doesn’t know I’m pregnant. Please, don’t tell him.” Nancy’s eyes grew dim. “We’re about to get divorced. He doesn’t want this child, but I do. So, doctor, please, I’m begging you, don’t tell him. If he finds out, the baby might not make it.” The doctor sighed, looking at her with pity. “Unless it’s absolutely necessary, and divorce is the only option, I still suggest you both reconsider. A child grows up healthiest and happiest with the love and care of both parents.” “Thank you, doctor. I’ll think carefully about your advice.” When Lucas returned, Nancy was sipping the porridge. She held the bowl in one hand and a spoon in the other, eating slowly and deliberately. To his surprise, after finishing the bowl, she asked, “Is there more?” “Yes.” Lucas was visibly pleased and ladled out another bowl for her. Nancy finished the second bowl of pumpkin porridge and then picked up a banana. The banana was quite large, and after two bowls of porridge, she felt full. After a moment’s thought, she set it back down. “Why’d you put it back?” Lucas frowned. “I’m a bit full. This one’s too big. I can’t finish it, and I don’t want to waste it.” Lucas picked up the banana, peeled it, broke it in half, and handed the other half to Nancy. Watching him devour his half in two bites, Nancy widened her eyes. “I thought you didn’t like bananas.” “It’s fine to have one occasionally.” “Oh, I’m tired. I think I’ll sleep now.” “Alright, rest well.” The next morning, Nancy woke up and stared in disbelief. “You didn’t go home last night?” The Lucas before her had messy hair and a wrinkled shirt, a far cry from his usual polished appearance. What surprised her even more was that he had stayed with her the entire night? A knock sounded, and Leo walked in carrying a bag. “Mr. Lu, I’ve brought your clothes.” “Hmm.” The sound of running water came from the bathroom, each drop seeming to fall on Nancy’s heart, making it impossible for her to stop her wandering thoughts. Lucas, what kind of person are you? You don’t love me, so why are you so attentive and thoughtful? If you were just a little crueler, maybe I could leave more decisively. When he stepped out of the bathroom, he was back to his usual self—his finely chiseled features as handsome as ever. “Did you bring the documents?” he asked Leo, his voice cool. “Yes, they’ve all been printed.” Leo respectfully handed the papers to Lucas with both hands. “You can leave now.” Once Leo was gone, the room was once again just the two of them. “I had a late-night international meeting last night. It ended past four, so I just stayed here,” Lucas explained. So that’s what happened. Nancy realized she had overthought things. Lucas sat in a chair nearby, his tall frame straight and elegant. His slender fingers flipped through the pages of the document in his hands, examining each one carefully. “You sent Leo away. Do you have something to say to me?” Nancy asked. “Yes, just a moment,” Lucas replied, his eyes still on the papers. Nancy had no idea what he was reading. About five minutes later, he closed the file, walked over with long strides, and placed the papers in her hands. His voice was calm as he said, “This is the revised version based on your requests. Take a look.” When Nancy saw the words “Divorce Agreement,” she suddenly felt like laughing. So this was what he had been so intently reviewing. How foolish of her to think he was working on some important document. Her requests? When had she made any requests? She hadn’t said a single word. Holding the divorce agreement, Nancy’s palms felt hot. It took her a moment to regain her composure. She looked up at him, confused. “I don’t remember making any requests.” “Just read it carefully first,” Lucas said. It took Nancy a full ten minutes to finish reading the divorce agreement. Afterward, she wasn’t sure whether to laugh or cry. Lucas had reallocated the assets—she was to receive two villas, two luxury cars, and a direct payment of ten million yuan. Nancy tilted her head back, tears welling up in her eyes. Ten million yuan? She, an orphan, had never known she could be worth so much. To divorce her, he was truly sparing no expense. “Lucas, deep down, you still think I’m the one who told your mom about the divorce, don’t you? You think I did it to extort you, to get more out of the settlement, right?” Nancy looked at him, feeling utterly defeated. After two years as his wife, in his eyes, she was just a greedy woman who would do anything for money. “What if I asked for a hundred million? Lucas, to get this divorce, would you agree to any demand I made?” Nancy asked with a bitter laugh.
