THE COURTHOUSE DINER on Main Street has been a Bellamy institution for almost seventy-five years. Overlooking the old Bellamy County Courthouse square, the diner was opened by a couple of friends returning from Europe after World War II. For several decades, it was one of the few restaurants in the area. Among my few happy memories of childhood were the Saturday afternoons, twice a month, when Dad would take me to the library. I’d check out an armload of books, mostly history but some fiction. Dad would have a book or two, usually one of the mystery novels he loved to read—-he’s the one who introduced me to Father Brown, Hercule Poirot, and Lord Peter Whimsey. We’d stop by the diner on our way home. Dad would order a cup of coffee and a peach cobbler with vanilla ice cream and two spoons.
