CHAPTER 55
I was screaming "Oh, my God, what happened!?" into the phone but Diego was gone. I called back repeatedly and it went to voicemail every time. I was trying not to hyperventilate as I drove frantically across town towards the hospital. It was rush hour and I cursed the traffic. At a red light I directed Siri to call the hospital and asked to be connected to the emergency room.
"Emergency Room Nurses' Station, this is Colleen, how may I help you?"
"I'm calling about a patient, Kip Simons, can you please tell me his status?"
"Are you a family member?"
"Yes." I was crying, trying to breathe and drive. "How is he?"
"Give me a minute and I'll check for you."
After the longest minute of my life Colleen came back on the line. "Hello? Yes, they just took him into surgery."
