23 Zara Zara was so occupied with helping Cath to ask for candy donations, she had barely time to breathe. Throughout the day she visited schools, ration card offices, and sports events in addition to her household duties, and in the evening she and Cath sat down to organize the activities of the next day. Then she fell into bed and slept like a stone. It was a pleasurable exhaustion, though, because she felt like she was actually doing something useful in her life. Helping children even with the symbolic act of a single candy bar felt so much better than embroidering pillows with the swastika, or asking for donations for the war effort.
