29 Zara Heavy shopping baskets in both hands, Zara walked back from the grocery store to the Gardners’ home. It was only a five-minute walk, but with the bags it seemed to stretch endlessly and she had to pause every now and then to put the bags on the ground before continuing her trip. Before the currency reform, it had been next to impossible to buy anything with Reichsmark and people had used US dollars or cigarettes instead. She’d always imagined that the Allied soldiers and their families swam in luxuries, because they had an apparently never-ending supply of hard foreign currency. But Cath had told her that even with dollars it had often been impossible to buy what she needed and they’d had to go to the PX store to buy supplies shipped in from the United States.
