THE LYRE—SOUTHWARD ALONG THE LABRADOR PENINSULALYREWe were in mid-winter east of Akpatok Island. The ice canopy above us was about as thick as it gets. Occasionally, old ice from a previous year hangs around near the east and west ends of Ungava Bay. During the winter, they become upward and downward projecting ridges that are hard enough to damage a sub sail. We were headed right toward them—if they were present this year.
