The second move

823 Words
Abel’s POV I had forgotten what silence sounded like, not the comfortable type. The kind that fills a room after everyone leaves. I’m sitted behind my desk and staring at the city through the glass window of my office. A folder sits on my desk. Lavender. I open the folder, and underneath were details my assistant had gathered. Nothing too personal, just basics like her work schedule, her public appearance and places she visits regularly. The gym i alread know of, i just need more. “So?” i ask My assistant is standing across my desk and he’s ready to give me everything about her. “She doesn’t exactly keep a predictable schedule sir.” I look up and tell him to explain further. “She works different shifts during the weekdays, saturday is the only day she comes to the gym. ” he explains “And after that?” i ask “She goes home sir” he says “Always?” i press “Always” he confirms I glance at the file again, there’s something about her that doesn’t make sense. When most people see me,they change the way they behave or the way they talk. They become careful, polite even and sometimes nervous. Lavender didn’t behave any differently when she saw me. She looked at me like i was just another person who had annoyed her. Then she demanded an apology and i almost smile at the thought. Almost. “She doesn’t even know who i am?” i ask My assistant nods. “Apparently not sir” he responds “Interesting “ “Do you need me to find out more sir?” my assistant asks I look at him and nod. “Yes” i answer “Nothing personal, i want where she works, how nany shifts she does, and family member, past relationships and the lots.” i tell him “Understood “ he says “Stay away from her, just watch her closely and don’t raise suspicion.” i warn “Yes sir” I close the folder and hand it back to him. “I’ll handle the rest” i tell him He nods and turns towards the door before he stops in his tracks and turns to me. “Sir?” he calls I look up and answer. “Yes?” “Why her?” he asks Good question. The same question i’ve been asking myself since i started investigating her. “Because she doesn’t seem interested in me” i answer My answer seems to confuse him but he just nods and walks away. When the door clicks shut, i stare back at the folder. Lavender. Her name feels oddly familiar now, and my mind drifts back to the gym. The way she refused to back down, the fact tgat she’d walked away without giving me another thought. My phone buzzes, snapping me out of my mind. I check the message, another meeting, another obligation. Another reminder my life was already complicating enough. Three days later, my assistant returns and this time he brought more findings. “She’ll be at a charity event on Sunday” he says I look up from my laptop. “Are you sure?” i ask “Yes” he replies “Why?” i ask “She’s an active sponsor at the organization” he confirms I lean back in my chair, Sundays are free days for me. “Good” My assistant nods. “Do you want me to arrange an introduction?” he asks “No need for that, i’ll handle it. ” i tell him “Are you sure?”he asks I close my laptop. “I don’t need an introduction.” Because i already know her. Well not personally, but we’ve met. Sunday came faster than i’d expected. The event was crowded, people moved in expensive suits and carefully chosen dresses, smiling at the camera and exchanging greetings. I barely pay attention and the paparazzi are out of sight for now. My eyes move through the crowd searching for her, then i found her. Lavender. She’s talking to a group of people talking about something that she’s interested in because she laughs and i stop walking. For some reason , seeing her outside the gym feels different. She looks less guarded and relaxed. She’s completely unaware that i’m watching her from across the room. My assistant appears before me. “That’s her” he confirms “I know.” i tell him He glances at me and asks what the next step will be. I adjust my cuff. “Now? now i say hello” And for the first time since our ridiculous encounter at the gym, i smile. This time,i wasn’t going to let her walk away before she answers the one question i have for her. Why did she seem completely unimpressed by me? Not like i care, but why?
