We stood in the road outside the hotel. The wind off the bay had scattered the fog, but the clouds still hung low. It wasn’t raining but the air had a chill to it. It didn’t bother me, but the marshal looked cold. He stuck his hands in the pockets of his big canvas coat. “Which way?” “What are you looking for? There’re lots of places with horses. We’ve got stables all over town.” “I said hide, not board. It’ll be outside but hidden away so people can’t see them.” I looked down the beach road. “There’s woods all along there. Nobody goes over that way much.” I hoped that included Daniel. He followed where I was looking. “It won’t be that way. There’s no way to get out without crossing over the creek.
