I met Miss Lil and Margaret coming the other way. They carried a big enamel pot between them, one of them holding each handle. Margaret had a string of tin cups strung over her shoulder and tied together with a length of clothesline. They clattered like horses over stone as she walked. Miss Lil called out to me as they came near. “My goodness, Sonny. Where have you been? Did you deliver the bread and blankets?” “Yes, ma’am. I was helping Anne with a nearly drowned man.” The soup smell coming up around the lid made my stomach growl. The only thing I had to eat that day was a biscuit. “Doctor Orr is there too, ma’am.
