Next morning the marshal hired a wagon and he and I and Miss Lil—and Daniel in the box—rode out to our cabin. Miss Lil said a few things about nothing during the ride, mostly to keep my mind off Daniel. I knew she was fretting over what she’d lost, of course, but still she came along out of concern for me.
