It hadn’t always been like that with us. Before I got sent up to Carlisle, Daniel acted better toward me. And later on too, right after he got me out of that place. When Pa died, the county sheriff made my mother send me to Indian school in Pennsylvania. He wanted to send Daniel, but he was too old by then and our Ma begged to let him stay to help with the farm. Not that it did her much good. In little more than two years, she was dead from coughing sickness. It was the winter of my second year when Daniel got word to me that our Mother was sick.
