Once I got into town, I crept around the side of Hannah’s house, squatted down under the window and peeked in. Hannah and her father were arguing. Both were shouting at the same time, and I didn’t need to hear all the words to know what it was about. Dodson waved his arms around and his face was red from yelling. She was crying but standing up to him. It didn’t look like he’d hit her again. Maybe he feared what people would say when they saw her, especially once word got around about how he took after me.
