The Outliers

Though The Outliers is a work of historical fiction, some of what happens might be true. For example, Lillie Lawrence, known as Miss Lil, was a real person. She operated two small brothels in homes she owned on Lewes Beach during the early part of the 20th century, and whose occupants listed their occupations as "housekeeper." In 1900 Miss Lil"s house was located at the near end of the Iron Pier, which was built by the U.S. Government in the late 1800s.

The OutliersMy thanks to Hazel Brittingham of the Lewes Historical Society, and a respected local historian, for providing me with true story of Miss Lil. There is a chapter written by Hazel that’s devoted to Lil in Volume III of the Journal of the Lewes Historical Society.
