Last July, like every year on the Fourth, Lewes Town held a shindig in the middle of Second Street. They had sack races and an egg toss and contests to see who could eat a pie the fastest. They even handed out hot dogs and soda pop. It was one of the times that colored and even Nanticoke could take part in things the whites did. My Ma used to take me in there when I was small, but I hadn’t been back since. For some reason, the year after I started at Miss Lil’s, I got it in my head to go again, maybe because she lived so close. I must have said something to her because she saw to it I was free that day.
