Hypnotized by Levi’s gorgeous smile, Chloe followed him to the dance floor. With his hands around her waist and her arms on his shoulders, they rocked slowly with the soft melody. Through the influence of alcohol, she found the courage to comfortably lean against his chest. She could hear the rhythm of his heartbeat that lulled her to a degree of sleepiness.
“Chloe?”
“Hmm?” she hummed.
Levi’s warm embrace made her feel an incredible amount of security. His broad chest was like a wall that would shield her from storms. Closing her eyes, Chloe found her thoughts funny. She inwardly admitted her attraction towards the football star. Yet, at the end of the day, they were just two strangers who found solace with each other that night.
“Are you okay?” Levi inquired, his hands tightening around her body. “You’re not drunk, right? I don’t want to get into the headlines tomorrow, you know.”
She chuckled, pressing a hand on his chest. She lifted her gaze and met his dark ones. There was something in his playful smile that stirred her insides.
"Why? Are you scared of being in a scandal? Wouldn’t it be fun to leave football with a bang?”
He beamed and caressed her cheek with a thumb. Then, he cradled her chin and lowered his head, his mouth touching the tip of her ear.
“If it’s with you, then not at all,” he whispered huskily.
Chloe shivered.
When Levi’s hand traveled down the small of her back, she bit her lip in a mixture of excitement and anxiety. She gulped as she quietly lamented when he did not go further. She must be insane for wishing he’d squeeze her ass and ravage her mouth in a fiery kiss!
“Do you always flirt like this?” she questioned, squirming in his embrace. She was afraid she would end up pouncing on him if she continued looking at his dark orbs.
Levi chuckled. “Is it that obvious?”
“Too smooth.”
“I see you’re enjoying it though.”
“I don’t mind. Working in this bar got me used to it.”
Levi ran a hand down her hair, inched away, then held her shoulder. He looked at her with a crumpled forehead. “Don’t make it sound so bad. You’re a performer, a musician. Surely, you don’t swing that way.”
“Indeed. I don’t understand what goes into that mind of yours to think I’m implying something like that. I just meant I’m used to hearing men playing with their words the way that you do.”
He winced. “Now, you’re making me look bad.”
“Are you not?”
He chuckled. “I suppose you have never been in a relationship based on your logic.”
“Bingo! I’ve seen enough. I don’t need to experience it myself.”
Levi squinted his eyes and observed her profoundly. He lowered his head and planted a light kiss on her forehead as he found her innocence endearingly interesting. After meeting countless women in his life, he found Chloe very different. Their chat was very natural. She never tried too hard either.
Having no lack of women in his bed, Levi had become tired and bored. He enjoyed s*x and booze more than any other man did. With his fame and wealth, it was easy to hook up with celebrities and models. But the excitement faded after some time. He bedded ladies for his own biological needs without chasing them. He never bothered to make small talk nor spend hours feeling their character either. Fortunately, he was blessed with a skill at sweet talking. Therefore, communicating with a pure girl like Chloe was a piece of cake.
Chloe’s naiveté awakened his urge to conquer her… have her for himself.
In fact, he was not on the lookout for a new plaything as he only went out to drink his night away. He had decided to retire from the professional league and lie low from the eyes of the public. Who would have expected that a rare jewel would land right into his arms?
“Did your first love break your heart? Why do I hear bitterness?
Chloe laughed. “Duh. It’s a common thing for every girl to have at least one unrequited love. I used to like a guy in high school. He was the captain of the baseball team.”
He smirked. “So, you do have a thing for athletes.”
“Well, that was before. Girls tend to fall for popular and good-looking guys. So, I made a vow not to repeat the same mistake again. Men like you might be an eye candy but you bring tragedy.”
Struck by her own words, Chloe stiffened in Levi’s arms as she inhaled his minty scent. Warning bells echoed in her mind. She pursed her lips, realizing that she had been carried away with the comfortable feeling he had offered. Fortunately, her rationality hasn’t left her yet. Otherwise, the consequences would be huge. She had no plans of hooking up with some random stranger. It was beyond her principles. She always believed that s*x should be done between two people inlove.
She was a hopeless romantic through and through.
“I’m not even sure if I should be flattered or offended,” Levi whispered softly.
“Consider yourself lucky. Since I’m in a rather good mood, I’d let your sweet talking pass. Plus, you’re sick. Only God knows if you’re going to have another chance to dance with me in the future.”
Amused with her humor, Levi led the dance with his chin resting atop Chloe’s hair. He wanted to kiss her on the lips, but he was afraid it would scare her away.
“I suppose I’d be the one asking for your autograph soon. Congratulations!”
Chloe was stunned. She was not expecting him to catch on rather fast.
“How did you know?”
“I just guessed. Even if I’m sick, you said yourself that I have enough money to get treated. Dying is out of the question unless I get into an accident. So, why would it be hard for Levi Bowman to dance with you in the future? You, being popular, would be the only reason left.”
Tilting her head, Chloe frowned. “Are you insinuating that marriage would not be a possibility? For sure, I would stop working and stay at home if I got married.”
Levi burst out laughing. He flicked her forehead and whispered, “For a virgin like yourself with no relationship experience, I presumed earning a million would be faster than finding a man.”
Offended, Chloe freed herself from his embrace. She could feel her blood pressure rising as she glared at him. She knew he did not mean anything bad about it. But she hated the idea that a stranger like Levi would think that a woman like her would have a hard time finding a partner. How dare he say those words so brazenly?
It was a slap in the face!
“Thank you for the dance, Mr Bowman,” she murmured politely in between gritted teeth.
Hastily, she stomped away from the dance floor without sparing Levi another glance. She marched to the bar and retrieved Jack’s signed knapsack. She thought it was rather a good thing for the night to end that way. Otherwise, she would find it tricky to get away from the superstar. At least she learned he was such an ass!
