Another Twist, Yet Again

“I’m so sorry I can’t accompany you today,” Jack mumbled as he pulled over in the underground parking lot of a luxurious mall. Chloe clicked her tongue. She had heard him apologize five times during the ride. If anyone saw them, they would assume Jack was the epitome of a whipped boyfriend, scared of ever making her upset. In reality, Jack was not at all that fussy on normal days. She knew that her best friend was being extra cautious given that she was at the hospital just yesterday and had encountered something mind-boggling. Moreover, their conversation earlier did not help either. Jack was still troubled by her sudden change of mind. “Geez. Stop apologizing. I’m just going to shop for a few winter clothes for Tony and Candy.” Jack scrunched his face as if a child throwing a tantrum. He wanted to hang out with Chloe that day. But he had a meeting he badly needed to attend. And his assistant was calling him incessantly to remind him that it was an important appointment. “Candy’s grown. She’s about an inch taller than the last time you went home. Tony seemed to be getting more and more jealous of her height. I heard he was bugging Aunt Sophia about taking vitamins that could speed up his growth. That silly son of yours is really…” Chloe grinned. Candy was their goddaughter – Dean’s daughter. She had been great company to Anthony. Chloe was glad that the kids had each other while growing up. With their demanding work, the adults barely had the time to play with them. Five years ago, when Jack learned that she was pregnant, he gave up everything he had in Wellington and boarded the plane to Letherbridge to take care of her. With his savings and the money he got from selling the apartment his grandmother had left, he dabbled in the stock market and cryptocurrency and luckily hit the jackpot even before she could give birth. He took online classes and finished a degree in Finance. Three years later, he was the CEO of a very well-respected investment company and owned shares in various businesses. Of course, they had to share their blessings and make sure that they were not the only ones to bask in the lavish possibilities of earning wealth. So, the moment Jack had a stable cash flow, he took Dean’s family to town. By the time Chloe debuted in her career, Dean had finished his degree in computer engineering. Now, just like Jack, he owned a company that was involved in technological research and development. It was even subsidized by the government! Chloe had little to no knowledge of business, but she knew that she could trust her nominal brothers when it came to making money. So, she invested a bit everywhere they did, helping her grow her wealth considerably. It would not be an overstatement if one said that all three of them had turned the tables against life. They were earning money they did not imagine they could. The only backside was they were so busy making a fortune that nobody seemed to have an interest in slowing down. Their schedules all year round were packed, and they only seemed to gather on special occasions, missing a lot on the kids’ growing stage. However, to Chloe’s relief, Sophia – Dean’s mother, was enjoying herself and very hands-on in taking care of the children. The old lady found a new purpose in life, having the responsibility to watch over Tony and Candy. “I can’t believe she’s almost ten. God, she was just like a little bundle of meat inside a basket when her mother abandoned her on Dean’s doorstep.” Jack chuckled. “She’s growing quite very pretty. Maybe, when she’s older, we’ll be able to know who the mother is.” Rolling her eyes, Chloe unbuckled her seatbelt. She had always expressed her dislike for unknown woman. As a mother herself, she would never understand why a person would have the gall to abandon her child. “So what? The moment she left Candy, she was no longer her mother. Besides, I don’t think Dean will ever let her be near his daughter.” “What if she had real, deep reasons for leaving the child? Think about it, Chloe. If she did not want to keep Candy, it would have been easier to get an abortion.” “You talk too much.” Grabbing her purse, Chloe pulled out her sunglasses and put them on. Checking her reflection in the rearview mirror, she unlocked the door and glanced at Jack one last time and said, “If she ever had a good reason, only Dean can decide what to do with her when the time comes that she appears back in his life. He’s not some playboy. He’s a geek, Jack. We both know that. He’s not some p*ssy lover. Whoever it was, I’m certain that he knows her. The mere fact that he never talked about the woman meant she did him dirty.” “True enough. He’s not some d*ck who would forget someone he shared a bed with. Dean is a responsible guy.” Chloe’s brow twitched, feeling the sting in Jack’s words. Was he purposely poking her sore spot by reminding her that Levi had forgotten her? What the hell? “Whatever. I’m off. I’ll be staying in Sunny Hills for the rest of my leave.” “Oh, by the way, tell that assistant of yours to stop spamming me with her messages every time she doesn’t get a response from you. It’s getting kinda annoying. One of these days, she'll end up on my blocklist.” Without saying anything more, Chloe shook her head and got out of the car. She thought she’d be wasting more time gossiping with Jack. If there was one thing that did not change about this friend of hers, it would be his interest in discussing other people’s lives. In fact, if she didn’t know better, she’d start thinking Jack swings the other way. Fortunately, the man was straight. Otherwise, he’d be breaking hearts. In her wandering thoughts, Chloe expertly avoided crowds as she strode inside the mall. It was a place where the rich and famous shopped. So, it was normal to have paparazzi lurking in the vicinity. Having successfully concealed her son’s existence from the public, Chloe was wise enough to do her things away from prying eyes. It was not her first time shopping for kids’ clothes but she made sure she did it without bumping into someone who might stir issues to smear her reputation. So, she only went to stores that had tight confidentiality for customers. Hence, even if the sales assistants recognized her, their lips were sealed lest they wanted to bid their jobs goodbye. However, God must have had a little too much time in His hands and had taken extra attention to her life, playing a little trick, yet again. “Oww!” cried a baby voice. Under her sunglasses, Chloe’s eyes widened. She looked down and found a little boy lying on the floor with one hand on his butt while the other holding on to a robot with a missing leg. When he looked up at her, his eyes started to glisten with tears. Alarmed, Chloe lowered her body, pulled away her sunglasses, and looked at the boy’s adorable face. She reached out and wiped away the tears that escaped the corners of his eyes. “I’m so sorry. Did I hit you? Auntie was not looking properly. Don’t cry, okay? Does it hurt?” “I… No, ma’am. It doesn't hurt. But…” the boy spoke in between sniffs, then continued, “but Adolf amputated his leg.” Amusingly, Chloe stared at the toy the boy held. The innocence was killing her and it reminded her of Tony. Even though her son did not like playing with toys, the cr*ck in his voice whenever he was about to burst into tears always made her heart ache. “Don’t worry, we’ll attach his leg again,” she replied, picking up the robot leg that had dropped right next to her right foot. “But it’s a limited edition. Uncle Luke will scold me,” the boy said sullenly, looking at his toy forlornly. Smiling, Chloe reached out and ruffled his curly dark hair. She stretched her hand and led the boy inside the store and settled into the waiting area after signaling the familiar-looking sales clerk. “Don’t worry, I’ll tell your uncle I broke your toy. Come, let’s attach Adolf’s leg.” Nodding his head profusely, Sebastian handed the robot to Chloe willingly. At the back of his mind, he could not help but admire the beautiful lady in front of him. Her voice was really sweet and she smelled like the garden when it was in full bloom. She seemed really nice, too. Unlike that ugly witch who always clung to his Uncle Luke. “There, he got his leg back,” Chloe murmured, raising the robot, slightly pulling the reattached part to make sure it didn’t drop. “Thank you, ma’am.” “You’re welcome. Did you come with your parents? Let’s get help and page them.” Sebastian shook his head and looked over her shoulder. When Chloe rotated from her seat, she saw a man in a camel coat. His hands slipped in the front pockets as he advanced in their direction. “That’s my uncle.” “Oh…” was all Chloe could utter, realizing that the said uncle had already stopped right in front of them. Before she knew it, she was already on her heels with her heart drumming. Lukas Leigh! What the hell? Why is he here?
