She comes on a Thursday as she said she would, a two day visit this time, which she has been extending incrementally in the specific, careful way of someone testing the ground before committing to it more fully. Each visit has been slightly longer than the previous. The first was two days. Then three. Then the Monday to Wednesday of autumn. Now Thursday to Sunday, which she has described to Faye as feeling like the right size for March. The lamp is good. It is the kind that produces a warm, directional light suited to reading rather than working, the specific difference being that reading requires enough light to follow a line of text over hours without strain while working requires a more distributed illumination.
