The knock came again, slower this time, and my heart jumped into my throat. I froze where I stood, the cup still warm in my hands, my eyes fixed on the door.
The old woman didn’t move at first, her expression calm but alert. The silence in the room felt thick, like everything was waiting for something to happen. Another knock followed, and this time she stepped forward. I held my breath as she reached for the door and slowly opened it.
The moment the door creaked open, I leaned forward slightly, my chest tight with fear. But then I saw her. My mother. Relief hit me so suddenly it almost made my knees weak. “Mum…” I whispered. She stepped inside quickly, closing the door behind her as her eyes scanned the room before landing on me. “Lyra,” she said softly, and in that moment, all the tension in her face eased.
I rushed toward her without thinking, wrapping my arms around her tightly. She held me just as firmly, her hand resting on my back in a way that felt both comforting and heavy. “I thought…” I started, but my voice broke before I could finish. “I know,” she said gently. “I’m here now.”
She pulled back slightly, looking at me carefully as if checking for any injuries. Then she held up a folded set of clothes. “You should change,” she said. “You’ve been through a lot.” I nodded slowly, taking the clothes from her.
They felt clean and soft in my hands, something normal in a world that didn’t feel normal anymore. I stepped into the next room to change, my hands trembling slightly as I removed my clothes. My reflection in the small mirror caught my attention for a second.
I looked the same… but I didn’t feel the same. Something had changed, and I could see it in my eyes. I quickly changed and returned to the room, my heart still unsettled.
A few minutes passed in quiet before another knock came at the door. My body stiffened instantly, the fear returning just as quickly as it had left. The old woman stood again, walking slowly toward the door. This time, when she opened it, Kael stepped in.
The moment I saw him, something inside me shifted. Relief. Confusion. Something deeper I didn’t want to name. His eyes found mine immediately, but then something changed. He paused slightly, his gaze lingering for a second too long before he looked away.
There was a distance in his expression now, like he was holding himself back. It made my chest tighten in a way I didn’t understand. “You’re safe,” he said simply, his voice calm but quieter than usual. I nodded, unsure of what to say.
He stepped inside fully, keeping a small distance between us, like he was careful not to come too close. The room felt different with him there, heavier somehow.
“Sit down, Lyra,” my mother said softly, her voice calm but firm. I hesitated for a second before moving to sit on one of the chairs. The old woman sat as well, and after a moment, Kael took a seat slightly apart from me.
My mother sat last, forming a small circle between us. The silence that followed was not peaceful this time. It was tense. Waiting. My hands rested in my lap, my fingers twisting together as I looked between them. Something was coming. I could feel it.
“Lyra,” my mother began, her voice softer than I had ever heard it. I looked at her, my chest tightening slightly. “There is something you need to know.”
A strange feeling settled in my stomach. “What is it?” I asked quietly.
She took a small breath, her eyes holding mine. “I am not your biological mother.”
The words didn’t make sense at first. They just… hung there in the air. Empty. I blinked slowly, waiting for something else, something to make it clearer. But nothing came. “What…?” I whispered, my voice barely there.
“I raised you,” she continued gently. “I cared for you, protected you, loved you. But I did not give birth to you.”
My heart started beating faster, confusion rising quickly. “Then… who did?” I asked, my voice shaking now.
She hesitated, just for a second.
And in that second, something inside me already knew the answer.
“Your mother,” she said slowly, “is the Moon Goddess.”
Everything stopped.
The room. The air. My thoughts.
It all went still.
“No,” I said immediately, shaking my head as I stood up. “No, that’s not true.”
“It is,” she replied calmly, though there was something sad in her eyes.
“No!” My voice rose without me meaning it to. “That doesn’t make any sense! That’s not possible!”
“It is the truth,” she said again, her voice steady.
I stepped back, my chest tight, my breathing uneven. “So… everything… everything you told me… it was all a lie?”
Her expression softened. “No, Lyra. My love for you is real. Everything I did—”
“But you’re not my mother!” I cut in, my voice breaking as tears filled my eyes.
Silence filled the room again.
Heavy. Painful.
“I was your caretaker,” she said quietly. “I was sent to protect you while you lived in the human world. To keep you safe until the time came.”
The time came.
The words echoed painfully in my mind.
“So my whole life…” I whispered, my voice trembling. “It was just… planned? Controlled?”
She didn’t answer.
And that was enough.
Something inside me broke.
I shook my head, tears spilling down my cheeks now as I stepped back again. “I can’t… I can’t do this,” I said, my voice barely steady. “I don’t even know who I am anymore.”
“Lyra—”
But I didn’t wait.
I turned and ran.
Out the door.
Away from them.
Away from everything.
The air outside hit me hard as I ran, my vision blurred with tears, my chest aching with every breath. I didn’t know where I was going. I just knew I needed to get away.
The ground beneath my feet felt unsteady, but I didn’t stop. I couldn’t. My thoughts raced, my heart breaking over and over again with every step. She wasn’t my mother. The woman I trusted, the one who raised me… she wasn’t really mine. And my real mother… wasn’t even human.
The truth felt too big. Too heavy.
Too much.
I kept running until my legs began to ache, until my breath came in short gasps. And without even realizing it, I found myself standing in front of a place that felt familiar. Mia’s house. My safe place. The one place that still felt real.
I wiped my face quickly, though the tears didn’t stop, and walked toward the door. My hand shook slightly as I raised it and knocked.
For a moment, nothing happened.
Then the door opened.
Mia stood there, her eyes widening the moment she saw me.
“Lyra?” she said, her voice filled with surprise and concern. “What happened?”
I didn’t answer.
I just stepped forward and hugged her tightly.
And for the first time since everything began—
I let myself break.
